Nationalism is based on patriotism which is deeply rooted in human instincts. Nationalism means a devotion to one's country, and adoration of one's country, a dedication to one's country. The spirit of nationalism has been, and continues to be, one of the most powerful forces in the world and has promoted many vital politics followed by different countries. The national flag, the national anthem, the national dress, the national language-all these are symbols of a nationalism which binds the people of a country and keeps them unified against the foreign invasion. People talk of national pride and national honour and reckon these among the highest value of life.
Nationalism is undoubtedly important in forging unity in a country and bringing about solidarity. It strengthens the people, gives them a common purpose, inspires them to make sacrifices in the service of the country, teaches them to put the country above self, creates in the people a respect for their national culture, national institutions, and national leaders. It creates in them a feeling of their own importance and a feeling of self-confidence in dealing with other people and nations. But there is another side to nationalism as well.
Nationalism is essentially an attitude of mind which is narrow and fanatical. Nationalism often becomes aggressive and violent. It may even lead to war. It makes international understanding and harmony difficult to achieve. It generates betterness among countries. It increases selfishness in one's relations with the people of other countries. It makes nations suspicious and distrustful of one another.
