How a democracy can be corrupted to suit the uses of one individual.
It has been 68 years since the start of World War II. The Nazi's planned extermination of the Jews ended in failure. Yet even today I am still haunted by the outcome of that plan. I had family living in Poland that I never got a chance to meet or get to know because of the Nazi's final solution. To this day I have no idea what happed to my grandmother's sisters and brothers there were 7 in all and my grandfather's brother's and sisters. There were 8 in all. I only was able to meet one other relative from that war so long ago. He was my grandfather's brother the only other relative from my grandfather's past who was able to escape the wrath of the Nazi's. I don't think people understand the outcome of that war. I have a mental illness. Yet because I can't find more living relatives from my grandmother or grandfathers side of the family. I have no idea if it ran in our family or if it started with me. If it ran in the family I would have to look out for it in future generations. If it was just me, then it could be a fluke still needing to be looked for but not as aggressively.
But I digress. Sixop million Jew were killed and their potential children or children's children are not here today. That's horrible. There could have been 30 million extra Jews today from their potential offspring and instead they were killed over a stupid war. They were killed because democracy in Germany was circumvented and corrupted into a dictatorship. Much like what is going on in Venezuela with Hugo Chavez. Chavez gained control of the government through the electoral process and then corrupted the system changing it so it benefited him and he could rule the country like a dictator.
History repeats itself and will go on repeating itself unless we learn from it and use the knowledge not to do it again. True he and his government are not murdering a specific religious race or nationality but he did end up president. And his defining act was to change the rules to benefit him much like Hitler did.
World War II could have been avoided altogether if world war one had been ended fairly. Instead of all the war debt was piled on Germany to pay. It should have been paid by all the participating countries. Because it wasn't and Germany was forced to pay the wars debit it led to rapid economic problems. This led to the rise of Hitler's' to power. Just like then something needs to be done in Venezuela with Hugo Chavez. Whats to stop Chavez if he decides he wants more power then Venezuela can offer. Already his government has taken over foreign oil company's fields and equipment and turned them over to the state.
Why? So he can pocket the oil money and use it for whatever he wants. I don't think even if the Venezuelan people rallied against Chavez they would get him out of office. I think he has too much of a hold on the country and anybody who stands in his way he either shuts out or eliminates. I mean you have to admire the guy. Even if he knows little of Hitler and ww2 he is a truly a man who gets historical irony. He is following Hitler's rise to power. Let's see here is a guy who tried to overthrow a previous president of Venezuela and then decided instead he would play by the rules and become president. Excuse me if I am wrong, but didn't Hitler do something similar?
Here we are talking about how to force him out? Obviously, he should never have been elected president in the first place. Now they will never be able to get rid of him because he has thought through the whole process of getting a previous president out and knows how to avoid it. The only way to get him out is if he dies. In other words the world will have to get along with Chavez for a very long time. Can anybody say Fidel Castro? What a sad thing for Venezuelans, but hey maybe I have it wrong?
Maybe he is doing just what the Venezuelans wanted bring socialistic democracy to the masses. Then why change the Venezuelan constitution to have the military take its commands from him instead of the legislature? Why take away the one power, the senate that could stop him from leading the road to dictatorship? And what's to keep him from changing the constitution again? Hence we have this problematic dilemma? Hitler corrupted a democratic country for his own means and used the Jews as the problem for German people being poor. Saying, You, don't have a job because of them so let's get rid of them.
Are we seeing the same thing with Hugo Chavez? That's for the reader to think about. He has risen to power and rewritten a constitution to benefit him and the people. His scapegoats were foreign oil companies and rich farmers and we saw how fast the foreign oil companies were thrown out of the country, next the rich farms?
As for me if I was a poor person in Venezuela and a president promised me an end to poverty food, water, a job? I might vote for him too. Hence the problem with democracy, you get what you paid for, garbage in garbage out. Not that I believe there is truly a better way.
