The Master Cleanse: Healthy Route or Just Another Fad?

Article about the Master Cleanse, and what it is all about.

Losing weight is easier said than done. Maybe you have gone on all these different diets, tried all the fads, but you still have seen no result. Perhaps a few pounds, but nothing that you thought you would see. Truth is, eating right and exercise is the winner in diets.

However, maybe a motivation booster would be a big help to get on the right track with losing weight. Along with a good motivation booster, it would be nice to get very healthy at the same time right? Well if that is what you are looking for, I suggest you try the Master Cleanse Diet.

What is the background on the Master Cleanse?

Stanley Burroughs created this diet in 1941. So it's been tested and true for over 67 years. In 2005 Peter Glickman wrote a book called Lose Weight, Have More Energy and Be Happier in 10 Days. He wrote the book and it made the diet a popular fad. However, a fad it is not. The diet is also known as the lemon diet, the maple syrup diet, and the master cleanser.

What is the Master Cleanse Diet?

The master cleanse in essence is a detoxifier. It removes the toxins, waste, and buildup from all the years from the body. It rids all the bad stuff that has been lingering inside for way too long. Even if you don't indulge in bad habits such as alcohol drinking, smoking, or doing drugs, you may not be the healthiest still.

In technicality, the Master Cleanse is a fast, or that is what most people would refer it to people as. However, it is much more than that.

What am I going to be drinking?

There are four ingredients in the Master cleanse. Most may pull faces when they hear what is in it. The recipe in its entirety can be found here: http://mastercleansesecrets.com/step3.php.

The four ingredients are:

  1. Water
  2. Fresh lemon or lime juice
  3. Grade B syrup
  4. Cayenne Pepper

I want to stress here that it has to be fresh lemon or lime juice; it cannot be the concentrated stuff you buy at the store, because that has sugar and added stuff that you are trying to get rid of! That is why you are doing the cleanse, remember. Also, it has to be grade B syrup, not the stuff you use on the breakfast table, because of the added stuff as well. One more point, if you do not like spicy drinks, you can take Cayenne pepper capsules. Two capsules are to be taken with every serving of lemonade.

While on this diet, you also do not eat anything. You will probably feel hungry, or maybe not because you drink a lot of the lemonade throughout the day. Drinking regular water along with the lemonade is okay as well.

If you want to get the full effects of this diet, you will want to buy laxative tea and non iodized sea salt (or Epsom salt). To start off the diet, drink the laxative tea the night before, and drink the saltwater in the morning. Now keep in mind you must do this all the way throughout. If you just cannot take the saltwater, then you can drink another laxative tea in the morning.

The diet is typically ten days, but can last up to 40. Really, it depends how well your body takes it and how long you feel you can go. Some people do not last past day one.

Are there side effects?

Yes there are. For some people, there are none. Other people there are a lot. Aching joints, exhaustion, hunger, cravings, nausea, tongue changing (color, texture, etc...), and perhaps others.

Now that I am finished with the cleanse what do I do?

So you finished the 10-40 days of the cleanse and are unsure of what to do? First of all, do not go back into the way you were eating before. For the first day after, just drink liquids. Commonly, it is best to drink orange juice and water. The next day move into liquids and soups; preferably soup with vegetables. Days three and four add fruits and vegetables. Then slowly ease into other foods, starting out with what will be okay on your stomach.

The diet helps rid the craving for junk food, drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. However, going back to old habits is an easy thing to do. Keep in mind the big picture, now that you are healthy just so no to those bad habits! Just say NO!

Another thing to keep in mind, if you are looking to "Lose weight fast" this is not your thing. Sure you will lose weight, but this is a detoxifier, not a magic quick fix. Like I said before, it can be a motivation booster if you ARE looking to lose weight.

Can I do the Master Cleanse more than once?

Yes, you can. Some people do it the first time just the ten days, then the next time they up it to 15 or 20 days.

I am going to be trying the Master Cleanse sometime in the foreseen future, I'll keep a blog of it on here, feel free to check that out when I do.

I hope you enjoyed this article, and if you decide to try the Master Cleanse, let me know how it goes for you. If you have any questions feel free to ask in a comment or message!

Take care all.

A very informative piece. It is indeed necessary to detoxify once in a while, thanks for sharing.

My dad put himself thorugh something similar, involving a lemon juice mix and olive oil, but that was a one night thing designed to clean the stomach. But I'm rambling. Good article.
