10 Most Deadly Events in Human History

A list of events in history which had the highest death toll ever recorded.

Over the millennia, various diseases have wrecked havoc upon the cultures of the world. Two of the most important, and devastating, were the Black Death and Small Pox. Many people assume the black plague (as it is also known) was only known in Europe, of which it killed over 60% of the population in the Middle Ages and the renaissance. It is present in any modern or ancient town, where humans live in close contact with one another. For example, in the 1800 and 1900's, the plague swept through many Asian nations. Small Pox, a similar disease to the Black Death in its causes and effects, has been around for well over 12 millennia, deriving around 10000 B.C. It is believed in Europe alone, over 400,000 people were killed each year by Small Pox from 1500-1800. Overall, it is believed to have killed over 300 million people, mainly due to it's incredible ability to spread through humans.

World War 2

During World War II, there were a combined 60 million casualties world wide. Russia alone suffered over 20 million. Others include; U.S.A., Germany, Japan, France, Italy, Poland, England, Yugoslavia, China, and Canada.

Reign of Mao Zedong in China

The Red Guards, under the control of Mao Zedong, caused upwards of 50 million casualties in the 1950's and 60's through political repression and The Great Leap Forward, an ambitious plan to turn China's mainland into a communist country.

Mongol Conquests

The Mongolian conquests under Genghis Khan in the 1500's paved a path of destruction throughout Asia and Eastern Europe. Its Estimated that by the end of his reign, Over 60 million people worldwide had been affected. (This includes deaths by disease and famine) The percentage of worldwide population to casualties makes this event the highest casualty rate of all time.

World War I (Without Spanish Flu deaths)

During World War I, its estimated 40-50 million people lost their lives through war. If you include the deaths caused by diseases that spread in close living conditions, the total number of deaths would rise to 100 million +. If you include this, it is the single greatest loss of life in human history.

An Shu Rebellion

The An Shu Rebellion took place around 750 A.D., during the Tang Dynasty of China. A commander, An Lushan, was given control of several hundred thousand garrisoned troops in the northern provinces of China. Through revolt, famine, and disease, its estimated that over 35 million people were lost to the rebellion.

Nazi Germany/Holocaust

During the Nazi Germany era, and the reign of Hitler, millions of people lost their lives. Specifically, during the holocaust of the Jewish people in Europe (Though other groups were prosecuted as well) over 21 million people were killed in concentration camps. This figure does not include the casualties lost through war (See World War II).

Atlantic Slave Trade

Over the course of three and a half centuries, millions of African people were taken from their homes and shipped off to the New World. Though common belief states the Europeans captured these people, most commonly rivaling African tribes would attempt to sell each other off to the slave merchants. Including African casualties in Africa, en route to the Americas, and through slave labor, estimations of the death toll range from 5 million to upwards of 60 million. (Figure does not include Native American death toll, See Conquest of the Native Americans)

Russia under Stalin Joseph

Stalin was the communist party leader and dictator of Russia from 1922-1953 at his death. By sacrificing millions of Russian lives, he helped create one of two major superpowers after the Second World War; status which lasted for well over 40 years. Through his “programs”, mainly industrialization and collectivization, as well as harsh political repression, estimates of the death toll have reached 50 million people.

Conquest of the Ming Dynasty

At the turn of the 18th century, the Manchu people, originating from Manchuria (North Eastern China), came down from the North and conquered the Ming Dynasty. For over 2 centuries, they ruled over China, creating what is known as the Qing Dynasty. The estimates for the death toll average to around 25 million people.

Conquest of the Native Americans

The indigenous peoples of the Americas, also known as Native Americans, lived isolated from the rest of the world for millennia. It is believed they traveled over a land bridge near the Bering Strait, although the theory is still contested. During the “conquests” of the New World, when the European nations colonized North and South America, over 90% of the Native American populations were destroyed by small pox and other diseases alone. Over 20 million people were killed by the end of the colonization period

Maybe you should do a poll on drug related deaths and raise awareness to the drug holocost. I'm sure it will come very close to if not exceed the aforementioned deadly events. OK So maybe you don't consider it an event, but who might one speak to, to raise awareness to the whole drug truth?

The drug truth..I'm fairly certain people are aware that drugs can be dangerous.

With the world's situation being as it is, as presented to us in this article, maybe drugs are a necessary escape for some people.

This is incorrect. Because you don't mention human-perpetrated events, we should assume it includes natural events. In which case, the Spanish flu (which is mentioned) killed more people than WWI, and should take obvious precedence over it. It killed between 50 and 100 million people, probably more than WWII. Similarly, the black death pandemic killed an estimated 75 million people, placing it above the first place event.

Smallpox, in the twentieth century ALONE, Smallpox killed some three hundred million people.

Thanks guys, I think I will correct the list sometime in the future, as the drug issue and the problem raised by Nick.

How about abortion 35,000,000 and counting!!!
#7 by Bob, Feb 4, 2008
How about you shut your damn piehole, Diana, you ignorant, right-wing, fundy ass-clown. Man, I hate anti-choicers (pro-lifers is a misnomer, since all they really care about are fetuses that aren't even viable life forms.)

Idiots.

It\'s difficult to comprehend these numbers. Simply appreciating the size of them, I mean. For instance, 20 million chocolate bars, 12 million trees. We just gloss over the numbers and think \"ooh! A lot\". Well, here\'s a trick I use sometimes...3500 days for every ten years you are alive so if you are thirty that\'s 10,500. So to get to some of the big numbers, 25 million from the Ming Dynasty, for instance, we can say that about 2300 people died EVERYDAY of your life. (as an FYI almost 3000 died at 9/11). If you are thirty that\'s about 100 people for every hour you have been alive. Seems sad? Now, as last twist, imagine that it\'s 25 million of you. 100 yous die every hour for thirty years. Now how do you feel...mad? I would be.

I love these comments almost as much as the article itself. There should be a companion article based on the atrocities committed in the name of God. How many millions have died fighting for their interpretation of words written in a book that man wrote?

Certainly the insanity of the Holocaust can be attributed in part to the antisemitism of Hitler's own misguided religious views. Couple that with the apathy of "Christian America" and the "Christian Vatican" to go to the aid of those in the camps, and you have complicit killing on a scale of the witch burnings/inquisition & the bloody Crusades combined.

It is hilarious that people come on here with a holier than thou attitude that seems to lack any sort of awareness of the atrocities committed right now by their church leaders - sexual abuse scandals/cover-ups, the denial of "Christian America" that genocides are again happening; this time in Africa. And rather than aid these people they instead supported another crusade against Muslim nations that pose no threat to their Military at home.

The Aid Bush has just now, agreed to offer to Tanzania, includes religious strings of a full 3rd of the aid going to programs promoting "no sex before marriage abstinence". As if that has ever solved anything - just ask the priests who turn into depraved deviants following this sort of blind morality.

Why aren't the religious righties standing up for these issues? It's like they think Jesus someone who would rather push pregnant women down stairs of an abortion clinic in an attempt to "save the life" inside her, than to consider the world as a whole is suffering because in part of their own ignorance.

well... i know that all illegal drug use has far less fatalities associated with it than alcohol does... so there are not likely millions to report in that area...

but if you look at car related or alcohol related fatalities, i bet there would be a lot...

While numbers in seven and eight digits can be impressive and set up a sort of competition for the biggest, \"Wow,\" I\'ve always thought the Native American Colonial Period tragedy was among the very worst. Imagine losing over 90% of the only people you know and count on as your friends, and in your own homes, with no explanation at hand regarding \"how\" and \"why.\" That\'s nine out of ten of your acquaintances lost. If you survive, you have almost certainly lost your entire nuclear family, and virtually all of your extended kin. Nowhere to run... no one left to run to.

Great comment Scrammy! I know it\'s been a while since this blog was started but... I was wondering if anyone has any info on events similar to 9/11 where approx 3000 (or more) dying in one event (with ill intent, not including natural desasters). Perhaps for some perspective it could be put into percentage of population.

Thanx
