10 Things You Didn't Know About Hitler

The everyday life of one the most horrific dictators in history.

  1. His Nazi Rallies were Inspired by Harvard Cheerleaders:

Hitler's good friend, Ernst Hanfstaengl, had been sent to study at Harvard by his parents. When he returned, he described the cheerleaders to Adolf, who became obsessed with the idea of stirring blind enthusiasm in this way. "'Rah, rah, rah' became "Sig Heil, Heil Hitler," Hanfstaengl recalled later. "That is the origin of it, and I suppose I must take my part of the blame."
  2. He was a draft dodger:

As an Austrian, he was required to register for the draft at the age of 20. Historians believe that his failure to do this is the reason he changed addresses so frequently in this period. After five years, Austrian authorities finally tracked him to Munich. They returned him to Austria, where he promptly failed his military physical, was judged unfit for combat, and let go.
  3. He was a chronic hypochondriac:

He feared disease, and diagnosed himself with numerous conditions, mostly intestinal disorders. He treated these with medications containing poisonous wood alcohol, atropine and strychnine, and bacteria cultivated from human feces. He resorted to leeches to lower his blood pressure. And near the end of the war, he became increasingly concerned about "fresh air poisoning."
  4. He became a vegetarian after attending the autopsy of a girlfriend:

She killed herself after being actively pursued by Hitler. He was grief stricken, and felt compelled to attend the autopsy. Afterwards, he refused to eat meat, and took every opportunity to ruin meat for others. He would often make jokes about preparing a pudding made from his blood, and called beef broth "corpse tea"
  5. Hitler enjoyed playing practical jokes on his staff:

One of his favorite targets was his foreign minister. He would have a staffer call the minister with the news that Hitler was furious with something he had said. Hitler would listen on the phone, providing further instructions to drive the minister to a nervous breakdown. One prank famously backfired, when he sent Ernst Hanfstaengl into Spain on a plane full of Gestapo, and made him think he was being set up for a suicide mission. Hanfstaengl took an opportunity while refueling to board a train to Switzerland, and before anyone could let him in on the joke, he turned himself in to the Allies, becoming an invaluable source of information.
  6. Hitler was an accomplished whistler:

He experimented briefly with playing the harmonica and flute, and sang occasionally, but whistling was his best talent. He could whistle loudly and on pitch, and could even reproduce long passages from Wagner with incredible accuracy.
  7. He was a rabid fan of cinema:

Having been inspired to a life of oratory prowess by the 1910 film The Tunnel, Hitler was a lifelong fan of movies. After gaining power, he regularly held private screenings for his inner circle. His favorite actresses were Greta Garbo and Shirley Temple. He didn"t care for Charlie Chaplin, even before he made The Great Dictator, and it's doubtful he ever saw it. He also enjoyed King Kong, even taking to celebrating victories by pounding his chest.
  8. He had a remarkable sweet tooth:

Hitler regularly ate up to two pounds of chocolate a day, in addition to pastries and hot chocolate with copious amounts of whipped cream. He generally took his tea with seven teaspoons of sugar, and Ernst Hanfstaengl once witnessed Hitler adding spoonfuls of sugar to a glass of red wine.
  9. He is seen in a famous photograph taken at the beginning of World War One:

It is a picture taken by Heinrich Hoffman, who incidentally would later become Hitler's personal photographer, on the day Germany declared war on Russia in 1914. Hitler can be seen, just an anonymous face in the crowd, clearly very excited by the prospect of war.

He would serve as a dispatch runner in the war, thriving on the terrible conditions at the front, before mustard gas damaged his vocal chords, forcing Hitler to learn to speak again.
  10. His dog had a rather large effect on his war policy:

Hitler was very proud of his German Shepherd named Blondi. He spent countless hours training her, and would even interrupt meetings with generals to practice her tricks. The generals realized that if Blondi did well, Hitler was in a better mood, and more likely to take their advice. If she did poorly, he would become sullen and stubborn. One of the officers later said, "I sometimes had the impression that the outcome of the Russian campaign depended more on Blondi than the German general staff.

As the author of "10 Things You DOn't Know About Hitler", here's the list of source citations that got removed when it was published.

1. "Unheard Witness" by Ernst Hanfstaengl (J.B. Lippincott, 1957)
2.The draft dodging, return to Austria, and failing the physical are well documented in numerous biographies, most notably "Hitler's Letters and Notes" by Werner Maser (William Heinemann, 1974)
3. USA Office of Strategic Services Source Book, and "The Buker: The History of the Reich Chancellery Group" by James P. O'Donnel (Boston:Houghton Mifflin Co, 1978)
4."The Psychology of Dictatorship" by G.M. Gilbert (Ronald Press, 1950); "Inside the Third Reich" by Albert Speer (New York: The MacMillan Co, 1970)
5."Unheard Witness" by Ernst Hanfstaengl (J.B. Lippincott, 1957); "Inside the Third Reich" by Albert Speer (New York: The MacMillan Co, 1970)
6. "The Psychopathic God" by Robert G.L. Waite (New York:Basic Books, Inc 1977); "This Is the Enemy" by Frederick Oechsner (Boston: Little, Brown and Co, 1942)
7. "The Psychopathic God" by Robert G.L. Waite (New York:Basic Books, Inc 1977); "Inside the Third Reich" by Albert Speer (New York: The MacMillan Co, 1970); "Unheard Witness" by Ernst Hanfstaengl (J.B. Lippincott, 1957)
8. USA Office of Strategic Services Source Book; "The Inner Circle: Memoirs" by Ivone Kirkpatrick (Macmillan, 1959); "Unheard Witness" by Ernst Hanfstaengl (J.B. Lippincott, 1957)
9. The picture is evidence on it's own, and Hitler serving as a dispatch runner in the German Army (he dodged the draft and failed a physical for consription in the Austrian Army, but voluntarily enlisted in the German Army because he considered Austria a "mongrel nation") is noted in "Der Fuehrer: Hitler's Rise to Power" by Konrad Heiden (Boston: Houghton Mifflin Co, 1944)
10. "Adolf Hitler" by John Toland (Doubleday, 1976)

Sorry about that.

I agree with Jash. Hitler was a monster, if you want serious facts 'another german', try this for size, Hitler ordered the mass-murder of 5,000 disabled children by lethal injection or by allowing them to starve to death - that was the beginning of 'Aktion T4' which resulted in the death of an estimated 70,000 disabled people. I can provide text-book ref. if you wish. My point is that Jash is portraying Hitler as a figure to be ridiculed, it's part of how we fought Nazi Germany in WWII. Making fun of the nazis was almost a national occupation, encouraged by the propaganda depts. to boost morale in Britain.
#3 by J. Kersey, Sep 5, 2007
Again, read what I wrote. He dodged the AUSTRIAN draft, and later served in the GERMAN army.
#4 by Carbon Monoxide, Sep 5, 2007
So Hitler was against the draft before he was for it?
#5 by Onflame, Sep 6, 2007
Hey, great article. History really interests me and though there are loads of controversies as we can all see, I think it was realy great of you to publish such an interesting article.

Good Work,

Hey 88 ---

In this unique nation we're all entitled to our own beliefs (unlike Hitler's Germany) and can express them (unlike Hitler's Germany) so here's mine. I bet any ten Israeli commandos* could defeat any twenty of your friends - and quickly.

*male or female

#7 by forthgb, Sep 6, 2007
I don't think "10 facts" is ridicule. It is simply a list of things not usually included in articles about Hitler. If it was ridicule, it falls exactly in line with another famous German's, Martin Luther, advice on how to make the devil flee from you. Laugh at him. I read this years ago in Nat'l Geo's article about ML.

Do me a favour 88, if you're going to be obnoxious, learn to do it right. 'Beleave' is spelt 'believe', 'your' should be 'you're'
'sig' is spelt 'seig'. You're obviously an attention seeking kind of person and I think you could at least be a bit more stylish about it.
#10 by PaulBirkin, Sep 7, 2007
Oh and incidentally, I've reported you for making racist remarks.
#11 by EdRoberts, Sep 7, 2007
Problem is, it seems to make him a caricature. Stupid people seem to do this with Hitler - making it harder to recognize the next Hitler when he comes along.
#12 by J. Kersey, Sep 7, 2007
My intent was never to trivialize the incredible horror perpetrated by Hitler and his Nazi regime. The point of this list was to make Hitler real, to give him substance beyond the cold facts of the Holocaust. To those that did not live through the atrocities, Hitler has almost become a legendary monster on par with Frankenstein or the Mummy. It might be more comfortable for us to not associate Hitler with the human race, but it is important that we understand the man behind the evil, in the hopes that we recognize it when it presents itself again.
#13 by Kix, Sep 8, 2007
I went to Russia in the nineties, and at the circus in St. Petersburg there was a clown who was obviously meant to be the ghost of Hitler. The other clowns ridiculed him, the crowd loved it!
#14 by forthgb, Sep 9, 2007
Another Poetic Tragedy has a point. A couple of months ago, I watched a documentary about AH's family background. His father, a completely worthless bully, Schnicklegruber(sp?) by name, assume the name of Hitler, claiming the name from a distant relative. Records, scaps from archives and bibles, showed a Jewish connection. It was not unot uncommon for Jews to disguise their background. Once he was in power, Hitler destroyed his father's native village and severely discouraged any speculation about his past.
#15 by Drake, Sep 9, 2007
The important thing is that he's in hell now and won't be doing any more evil on this earth...

All the rest is inconsequential.
#16 by georgew, Sep 10, 2007

Hitler wasn't a vegetarian, he just didn't eat meat a lot.
#21 by j_Jacob, Sep 12, 2007
People. 10 things is a good list. It might not be 100% correct, but he provides credible sources. Also, Hitler was not a Jew. He had no Jewish relatives. the author has sources. get some before you comment. Look up the things in the list. If they are not all exactly true the way he says it, they still may be true (i.e. vegetarian vs. doesn't eat meat a lot.) Hitler was a terrible person. But this list was NOT made to be funny
#22 by Beatrice, Sep 13, 2007
From a strictly technical point of view, this was a well-written and very well-supported article (good job citing your sources!), and I am looking forward to seeing more of your work!

#24 by HyperJen, Sep 13, 2007
forthgb, not quite...

Alois Hitler [Adolf's father] was born illegitimate. For the first 39 years of his life he bore his mother's surname, Schicklgruber. In 1876, he took the surname of his stepfather, Johann Georg Hiedler. The name was spelled Hiedler, Huetler, Huettler and Hitler and probably changed to "Hitler" by a clerk. The origin of the name is either from the German word Hittler and similar, "one who lives in a hut", "shepherd", or from the Slavic word Hidlar and Hidlarcek.

10 more facts:
1)Hitler was an amateur painter, his ambition was to be recognized as an accomplished artist - something he shared with his arch foe, Churchill.
2)Hitler always wanted to be an architect but lacked the education and skills. He therefore saw in Albert Spier a passion he once possessed and utilized Spier for re-designing post war Berlin.
3) Hitler, when told the Russian guns were destroying parts of Berlin, optimistically dismissed the news by saying that the buildings will need to be destroyed anyway to make way for his plans for rebuilding Berlin.
4)Hitler was advised by Heinrich Himmler who had a passion for the occult and astrology to used an astrologer to guide his decisions, although it is believed Hitler did not take it too seriously himself.
5) Churchill employed an astrologer to tell him what Hitler's astrologer would be telling him in order to try and second guess Hitler's decisions.
6) The bomb in the suitcase that narrowly missed killing Hitler was due to the fact that the bunker was being redecorated and they convened in a wooden hut instead where the blast dissipated. It is further believed that the case was moved away from Hitler by another officer as it was in his way.
7) Hitler believed that it was providence that had saved him from the bomb and it strengthened his grip on Germany making his faith in himself stronger, albeit with a fair dash of paranoia.
8) Hitler was convinced the Allies would invade at Calais, despite his generals belief in Normandy and he overruled Rommel's request to move much needed Panzer divisions to push the Allies off the beaches in the early stages believing the invasion to be a ploy. This was largely due to the success of Allied misinformation.
9) Hitler overruled the use of the first jet planes as fighters which could have turned the tide of air superiority by insisting they use the jets as bombers.
10) Hitler supported the V1 and V2 program over the research on the atomic bomb due his suspicion and lack of understanding of the scientific principles of nuclear fission.

The list reminds us all that he was a human, after all. A damaged, sick one, but human anyways. People tend to forget that.
#38 by thejasman, Sep 29, 2007
i'm sure people knew he was a human being and not some robot. :D

#39 by Matt, Sep 29, 2007
He was very charismatic and a skilled orator. Whatever you say about him, you can't say he was stupid. Insane? Maybe. There is a thin line between genius and insanity, and I think he crossed it, with horrific consequences for humanity. Even worse, we still have many similar cults of personality in existence today -- Kim Jung Il is a serious threat; do not underestimate that military or the ruthlessness of atheistic communism.
#40 by Ste, Sep 29, 2007
Why are you guys reading so much into this? It's just a bunch of facts about some person. Hitler wasn't a monster, he was a human being. Not dis-similar to you and I. I think it's important to recognise that. It shows what people, bad leaders (take heed, America) can do.

#42 by Mark, Oct 1, 2007
Thank you for writing this, it was very interesting to get to know the world's (supposed) most evil historical character, a bit better... The slight and subtle "eccentricities" really create an understanding of his overall complete insanity.

matty boy on #46, don't think that China is a big threat, you obviously don't know anything about Chinese people. Go look at Chinese history, and see if there is one time, one time that China has ever invaded any nation.
#44 by Onflame, Oct 3, 2007
I am on no quest to oppose any countries out here, but to "Hey" on comment #46, China HAS invaded various countries in the historic world. Please do not post false comments without the right knowledge. Besided, nothing's future is decided by its past. China with its large economy and vast population can easily emerge as the next super-power of the world.

@ comment #39, what do you mean by "so far, you seem to be far better at this than I AM" ? I haven't noticed even one of your articles on Triond!
#45 by Paul, Oct 3, 2007
#46 - I'm sorry but the briefest of dips into 20th century history shows that China invaded Tibet in 1949 and Vietnam in 1979. I'm not sure where you got the idea that they haven't invaded anybody.
#46 by Onflame, Oct 4, 2007
Exactly my point, @ comment #48
#47 by LRC, Oct 7, 2007
was just gonna say China has invaded Tibet, like #46 said, but what about Manchuria? Taiwan? North Korea had Chinese troops helping them in the Korean War. Thank God Mao died and is in Hell with Hitler, Mussolini, Pol Pot, Nixon, etc.

#55 by SteveMD2, Nov 28, 2007
But5 the problem is the forces that gave hitler power still live in the USA. Hitler was a madman, total psychopath. Possibly his hatred to Jews was because he may have been the illegitimate son of a Jew, per the out of print but you can find it book \"I was hitler\'s doctor. What else could have been worse in Germany then being illegitimate and Jewish. Hating himself, hitler projected his hatred out on others. Standard fare from psychology. The total economic collapse (in the early 30\'s it cost 20000-30000 DM to mail a letter, talk about inflation. So a terrified population was ripe to fall for this kind of nut.

In the USA we have the makings of something even worse. A militaristic administration who invaded Iraq to establish permanent bases there (mil term \"power projection\"), and steal iraqs oil for the profits of Bush\'s oil buddies, who were able to give eg the exxon CEO a $400 MILLION retirement package. And tie this in with the scared people - who doesn\'t think a little about 9/11 when you get on a plane? What makes it worse is that while I think that the churches in Germany were not actively a significant supporter of the madman, in the USA Bush and company are selling out to the extremists of Christianity. These are the Dobsons, (fortunately dead) Fallwell, etc. and the extremist evangelical movement who would close our schools, so they could totally brainwash our children. These are the same people who believe in a second coming of Christ, but Jesus will be standing over the bodies of perhaps a billion dead people after the apocalypse. Of course, the right wing fanatics will be \"saved\" due to their beliefs. Nice group. And the joining opportunity for these two groups is 9/11. So many scared people, willing to do anything. Ever heard someone say we should incinerate with Nucs all the Muslims? I have.

So the bottom line is we get the worst of both worlds. Militarism for theft of resources (what WWII was about, especially Japan with its demigod Hirohito (read that \'Bush now\') mixed with religious hatred used to recruit more people, eg the hatred of these groups for the new Jewish Victims, our Gays. The best known example of when another scene like this occured was when Roman emperor Constantine allied himself with the Catholic Church about 200? AD. Ultimately these two corrupt forces gave the world the 1000 + year dark ages of no social progress, and killed possibly 50 million Muslims, no wonder it is so easy for some of them to hate us - it is in their paranoid culture.

They say that Those who fail to learn from history are bound to repeat it. We may be heading that way, while Bush, with his upside down smile falls into the trap Bin Laden laid for him, Cuz you can bet Bin Laden has this all figured out, and remember they could care less how many die, for they two have a similarity in the belief of death is desireable to life - think suicide bombers- and the expectation of a great final battle.

Wake up America before it is too late!!
#56 by historyman, Dec 25, 2007
Odd about him being a draft dodger. He won the Iron Cross 2nd class for bravery. The Iron Cross 1st class was given 4 million times. The IC 2nd class only 175,000 times and usually only to officers. I have no idea what he got it for doing.

Goering (a WW1 hero) said Hitler was the bravest man he ever knew.
I have no admiration for Hitler I just think these are interesting facts that are little known.

Want to check out an interesting German WW11 pilot? Hans Rudel won the highest, and only one given, medal in WWII.

“Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it."
-Adolf Hitler.

great quote, or greatest quote? still applies today unfortunately...
#59 by Gunter, Jan 16, 2008
I think the article is just a small human side of a sick person, hitler can´t be defined as normal or average, someone normal can´t murder children. Studies show that the brain has a capacity of prevent a person of puting in action his morbid vision, that´s why he is not to be blame alone, I believe his nazi party and the people that followed him are the ones to blame for the holocoust.
#60 by Michael Raap, Kent, WA, Feb 1, 2008
These 10 things that J. Kibbitzer Kersey dreamt up about Hitler are merely fairy tale.

Hitler never dodged the draft during World War 1. Hitler served in France and Belgium as a runner for the 16th Bavarian Reserve Regiment (called Regiment List after its first commander), which exposed him to enemy fire.

Hitler was twice decorated for bravery. He received the Iron Cross, Second Class, in 1914 and the Iron Cross, First Class, in 1918, an honour rarely given to an enlisted soldier.

All Germans should be proud of Hitler\'s accomplishments. He was a great leader who just wasn\'t given enough time to complete his vision of a better world.

He also contributed to the development of wireless communications by funding research into developing remote controlled rockets that could be manuevered using radio frequencies. Besides Volkswagen, Deutsche Telecom is contemporary company that owes much of its\' success to Hitler\'s forward thinking leadership of giving the common man the ability to use and improve life through technology. T-Mobile USA is a subsidiary of Deutsche Telecom and carries on the proud legacy of Hitler\'s technological vision.

#65 by friend9, May 20, 2008
Here's some more about the "work" of Adolph Hitler for your project: Hitler got the original idea for the murder of 6 million Jews, the majority of Europe's Gypsies, hundreds of thousands of the mentally ill (including one of his own relatives) from who? Incredibly, from the Americans.

I'm an American. I'd better state that you'll think I'm blowing smoke against the USA, as so many love to do. No. It's true, and we need to stay vigilent to avoid allowing the kind of thing happen again--a movement early in the 20th Century (with some 19th Century antecedents), that led to the first efforts of the Third Reich to experiment with eliminating people they decided they didn't want to live. What am I talking about?

The American Eugenics movement was in some ways the pseudoscientific precursor to the later Genetics research. Ironically (or perhaps a sign we should learn from), the headquarters for the American Eugenics movement was in the SAME building in Cold Springs Harbor, New York that the main labs for the Human Genome Project occupied 75 years later).

Eugenics was all about hastening "natural selection" in an effort to improve the population. Basically--to jump to the most troubling parts of the movement--the American Eugenics Movement championed the idea that people who were "substandard" in any way--including people labeled "the feeble minded" should be involuntarily sterilized, so as to avoid the prospect of them inflicting new generastions of mental misfits on the society and the public dole (i.e., "welfare," general assistance, etc.). They were all about creating a stronger, happier, healthier race. I say race, because since the people in charge were White, the only people they looked at benefitting were Whites. And through their efforts 35 U.S. states passed Eugenics laws allowing for the involuntary sterilization of the mentally and psychologically disabled, aka: the retarded, aka: the feeble-minded. Many thousands of boys and girls, young men and young women were castrated or given hysterectomies. There were none of the more subtle ways available in those days of tying tubes and giving vascectomies. What was done to those who could not defend themselves was irreversible.

Of course, many thought it was "compassionate," since the poor mentally dysfunctional person could not adequately care for children. But--as is usually tha case--it didn't stop there. Before you know it, your girls made pregnant by older relatives were ruled "promiscuous" and were "sterilized." Boys in juvenile homes who caused trouble were castrated. And--the thing that drove me to study this shameful chapter in American history: American Indians and people of mixed heritage ... particularly people with mixed African, Indian, and European ancestry were targeted for sterilization. One man in Virginia, Walter Plecker, made it his life's work to hunt down people attempting to "pass for White" so tat they could be targeted for sterilization--as a means of keeping the White race pure.

Maybe you can see where this is headed.

Ultimately, the Germans began to look at what was being done in America. They knew that some of the earliest writings on Eugenics had been written my Germans, but nothing had been done over there to IMPLEMENT the kinds of things that had been suggested. No, only the Americans had the kind of initiative necessary to start such a program and carry it out ... around the enture country. It was so popular that people like Harriman--the business partner of Prescott Bush ... yes, George W. Bush's father ... supported the Eugenics movement monatarily. Harriman's wife donated as much as nine MILLION 1930's dollars to the study and implemmentation of Eugenics in the United States.

The Germans, seeing this happening in the U.S., noted that it would be a terrific way to implement some of Hitler's ideas for "purifying" the Aryan race. And they started small--by sterilizing most of the mentally ill in Germany.

So successful was the program, and so grateful were the Germans to the American Eugenics Movement, that they invited a number of celebrated American pseudo-scientist to the University of Heidelberg to receiv honorary doctorates for their pioneering work in mass human sterilization.

You know what happened next. The "feelble-minded" in Germany were just the first step. Next they started targeting the Gypsies. Many thousands were sterilized. Then the Jews. But the Germans--being impatient and always wanting to improve upon an idea, to be more efficient, etc., decided that sterilization was too slow. It would take several generations to accomplish the goal of getting rid of the Jews, for example, and so they started looking at faster, colder, and more stark ways to eliminate what they called "the Jewish Problem" or "the Jewish Question." In short, they jumped from involuntary sterilization to the death camps. Many Gypsies and Jews who had already suffered the indignity of sterilization, were subsequently also murdered in the death camps.

But the kernel of the idea of the elimination of humans that didn't fit the Third Reich's new paradigm was Eugenics, and in the sick minds of Adolph Hitler and his advisors, that eventually morphed into the Holocaust. So an American program was borrowed by the efficient Germans and taken to its ultimate level of depravity by a few madmen at the top ... but [the very scary part] carried out by ordinary soldiers from Generals to Privates, as well as local workers and even other prisoners!

So this started off as a topic about Hitler who seemed so "normal" when you look back at all these quirks and human frailties. But it can't END with Hitler, because he was only the architect of that lunacy. Many, many others helped put him in power, keep him in power, and fund his social transformation / war machine. And AMONG those who helped finance the Nazi's--so they could be in power and pull this kind of crap on the rest of the world--were, once again, some AMERICANS.

I know, it sounds like I'm out to sully the name of the U.S.A. But I'm not. If we or some of our people supported the Nazi's so that we--or some of us--helped secure Hitler's position as the most heinous dictator in history, then we need to OWN it and to LEARN from it ... just like so many have told the Germans that THEY need to do (and by all accounts HAVE done).

What am I talking about? Consider that to many Americans back in the 1930's the Nazi's seemed normal. Many American were anti-War, pro-isolation, and figured that since the French had insisted on such harsh terms against the Germans after WWI, that it was just normal for the Germans to have to find a way to get their national pride back. Some saw the goose-stepping, master race. militaristic Nazi's as the means to the end of starting up Germany's economy again ... thus helping capitalism flourish around the world, etc. Little did they know.

And some American companies were making a lot of maney in the process of getting Germany back on its feet--investing in the future of a country that could be counted on to produce good products, consistently. Remember when I said that Harriman--Prescott Bush's business partner (Bush started out working for Harriman, actually), was pro-Eugenics. Well, Bush and Harriman were also pro-Nazi. They did major big-time business in Germany before the War. But as things started rolling toward War, little issues like the invasion of Poland by the Nazi's led the U.S. Congress to implement the "War Powers Act" that stated that NO American business could continue to do business with companies in Nazi Germany since, obviously, if you work to the benefit of German industry, you strengthen German military potential at the same time. Harriman and Bush decided that unlike DoPont and others who pulled out of Germany to obey American law, THEY would continue to do business in Germany. They pioneered the notion of starting front-companies to make it less obvious that they were breaking American law, and continued right along ... in effect ... funding the German war effort.

One of the companies that Harriman and Bush supported ended up using SLAVE LABOR during the war! But before that happened, the U.S. government discovered Bush and Harriman's treachery and hauled them into Federal Court. They were legally sanctioned and fined $1.5 MILLION 1930's dollars for breaking the War Power's Act.

Incredibly, AFTER the War, when it was well known that one of the companies they had helped to fund had used slave labor, Prescott Bush sued in post-War German court in order to get his investment back ... and received, ironically, a $1.5 million dollar award. Money made on the backs of innocent men and women worked to death as slave laborers in Nazi Germany only a few years earlier! That money is part of the foundation of the Bush fortune. Invested in oil, in large part, it ultimately led to the development of friendships between the Bush family and the royal family in Saudi Arabia. And with the family of Osama bin Laden ... the only people allowed to fly out of the United States immediately after the bombing of the World Trade Center by their brother's people on 9-11.

American Eugenics fueled the Holocaust that took place in Europe, funded--in part--by the business associates of Prescott Bush. And then the German War machine strengthened by the continuation of business arrangements between German companie and American companies willing to break American law to continue their pursuit of the almighty dollar.

Look around. Look at the gas pump. Where is our Army? Doing what? For who? Who put them there? Who has kept them there? What are we doing allowing that family with connections to the Holocaust and the Nazi military machine, to big oil, to arms and munitions ... all of it ... to stay in power and mak a mochery not only of US, the American people, but of freedom, democracy, and everything every true-hearted American Soldier, Sailor, Airman and Marine every fought and died for. We should be insuring World peace and prosperity. Balancing the inequities around the globe. Instead, what are we doing? And who is at the helm.

We need a REAL change in Washington.

No more Hitlers.

friend9 and comment #67. An immpressive bit of writing. While I was aware that many individuals and companies had profited directly from WWII, I was not aware of the direct link between that horror and the current occupant of the Whitehouse. This is alarming.

This clearly requires further investgation by everyone with any interest in learning, not only what is true, but why and how things like this can be \"unknown\" by so many for so long.

J. Kersey gave us a reading list. This is a good start. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks for listening, earl53.

Seems to have caused a lot of contraversy but I don't think the article clames to be the most important facts about Hitler, so many of the comments here are null and void. I've been studying history for years and I learned some things from this article so thanks.
Another interesting fact about him, he was addicted to speed, Churchill was quite partial to it as well, which explains a lot about the war I think.

First off, It was Albert Speer that was Hitler's architect, not Spier.

Second, Hitler had good ideas, great ones even. He just took things too far.

How easy is it to label someone a monster or human? We are all human. Hitler included. Someone people just take their views on life and their beliefs too far. Most everyone can be guilty of that. The church does it. They have nuns and pastors that devout their lives to their beliefs and become corrupted. Doing what they want to whomever, but still believe that because they say a few "Hail Mary's", they are saved.

We are seeing the makings of Hitler's government again here in America. Corrupted Politicians doing everything in their power to benefit themselves. Sure, people are angry about it, but the majority don't care or don't know. The economy is down and people are hurting. All it takes is ONE charismatic person to come to power and to rally the nation. Once this happens, they can do pretty much whatever they want. They have a hurt nation wanting a better life behind them. This is what Hitler did.

People can blame him for everything. But he had the support of his nation for what he was doing. The citizens saw things get better for themselves and didn't really care what other things he was doing. They were better for it.

To look quickly at something such as this and to cast a blind eye on everything that you do not believe in will be the undoing of everyone. If enough people do this and support a leader that looks good, talks good, and produces change...most people will "forget" all the other horrible things they're doing.

Seriously people. I'm and American and related to Albert Speer. Yes, I have Nazi blood in me, just as a lot of other people do. But what separates me from other people is that I can see with an unbiased eye. Such as the writer of this article (accused of giving human qualities to a monster), SteveMD2 (for exposing America's role), and friend9 (further exposing America's role). People that can report the facts and JUST the facts are what we need (You guys rock)

We are few and far between, and this is why we have corrupted politicians invading countries and killing innocent people for Oil.

It won't be long until we have our WW3 and when this happens, most of us will die before we see AGAIN the err of our ways.

for all the people who study history,i am telling you need to pay attention to the out side world and see the real reasons why these tragedies happened. \"DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT ALL HISTORY BOOKS SAY\", many of them just say lies and not the truth.

seriously? \"hitler was a great leader\"
ii bet you wouldn\'t b saying that if you were in a concentration camp
#86 by Mary Smith, May 8, 2009
Okay 1: hitler was a sick sick sick man!!!
2: why make it seem like he was some ordinary Joe when inflicted so much pain to thousands?!
he killed over 30,000 people for no reason just for the fact they didn't have blond hair or blue eyes!
So unless you are a "pureblood" like he claimed to be, he would most likely have killed you too!!!
so in conclusion; HITLER SUCKS
