America's Influence on Australia in the 1860's

At the end of World War II only the United States commanded the resources and the expertise required to produce a nuclear weapon.

Britain's decision to build an atomic weapon was taken in 1947. The British thought they would be able to test their nuclear weapons in American as they were already established however American legislation prohibited the transfer of nuclear weapons technology to other nations, no matter how friendly.

In December 1952, the new British Prime Minister, Churchill, asked Menzies for agreement in principle to a series of tests at Emu Field, some 1,200 km northwest of Adelaide in the Great Victoria Desert. Menzies replied promptly, in the affirmative. On 15 October 1953, Totem 1, a device with a yield of approximately 10 kilotons was detonated; two days later, Totem 11 was exploded with an approximate yield of 8 kilotons.

Through the 50s and 60s atomic testing continued throughout Australia even though we were not fully aware of the full devastation it could cause. The British government failed to disclose sufficient information to permit the Australian government to make an informed decision about the testing program, particularly the early Monte Bello tests and the minor trials.

TRADE

In 1960-61, the UK was our top export destination with Japan second and the USA was third.

FASHION

The 1960s were times of great change, and Australian society was influenced greatly by American popular culture, through music, film, television and fashion. This especially affected teenagers. The 1950s meant the emergence of the teenager; it also brought peace and prosperity to many. And during the fifties there were far more American films released in Australia, and they became more popular than many Australian films. Films were of great influence to the youth of the 1960s.

Theatres and cinemas were popular venues for Australians. America was the biggest influence in film because of Hollywood. Britain also played a role in influencing Australian film making.

America had an enormous influence on Australian music. They tended to consistently top the "pop" charts in Australia.
