It may well be of interest to some people, to read about what was happening years ago. The below information is taken from an 1863 Manchester newspaper.
'A youth, named Opie, the son of an innkeeper, living at Wendron, near Helston, Cornwall, ran away on Saturday evening, with £1,000 the property of his father. He was apprehended at Moorshead on Monday, and a considerable portion of the money recovered'. Did dad forgive him? I don't know!
'A man, named William Milner, living at Hartlepool, was fined £3 and costs, on Saturday, for firing a pistol at a lad, named Westrop. The defendant was gossiping with Westrop's sister, when Westrop interrupted him. The defendant said he was not aware that the pistol was loaded with shot.'
On Friday evening, as two of the sons of Mr. W. Thompson, Carpenter Road, Edgbaston, were enjoying an evening smoke in the garden surrounding the house, their attention was aroused by a rustling amongst the plants near, and by seeing a ladder reared against an open window of the house. The ladder was removed, and one of the Mr. Thompson's went upstairs armed with a fire-poker. He there saw a man making his exit through the window to the leads which cover the verandah, from which he leaped to the ground. A maidservant and Miss Thompson there endeavoured to detain him, but the burglar succeeded in making his escape. On searching the house, the only things that where missing, were some little matters of jewellery.'
