Ancient Roman Farming

To the Romans farming was very important to them. Basic methods of farming changed a bit through centuries, and then farm making became more productive and efficient. All over the empire they introduced these ideas and got better equipment to primitive countries like Britain. Also the Romans spread new fruits, vegetables and crops, across the empire. Most farms in the early republic were small and only run by a few slaves. But later on the farms grew bigger to live on, also sold a lot of any surplus. When there was the Punic war, a lot of farms were destroyed by battles and marching soldiers. Many farms were lost because farmers that owned small farms couldn't afford to repair them, after been damaged and destroyed. It also grew in away, because when the farms were destroyed and the owners moved out, rich Romans would but the destroyed land and build bigger farms to replace them. The larger the farm also has much more slaves and that mean's more food supplies quicker.

An Imperial farm made a lot of wine, oil, cattle's and crops, but many other farms only worked on one or two of these goods. Most farms kept about two hundred chickens because of their feathers, meat and eggs, these also included geese. The way farm grinded flour by using grain is they would drive a horse over the grain. Horse were bread for army purposes on a farm and rarely were used, besides from grinding grain to flour. Pork was a very popular meat in Rome so farms had a large number of pigs. Sheep were popular because of their milk and wool, the milk was very popular to Romans. Grapes were very common and they were used for food and wine. In winter Romans would normally eat pigeon's meat, so the pigeons were kept in dovecotes until winter. Honey was basically the only sweetening in Rome so Romans also kept bees and their hives. Farms were dedicated to grow food for nearby towns.

Ancient Roman Medicine

A lot of procedures and tools that were used in ancient Rome are still used today, but slightly modified. It is said that the ancient Romans had basically the same knowledge about medicines and treatments then people of today. Very early Romans believed that a combination of folklore and magic was the only way to fight diseases. Every home in Rome had its own special stock of herbal remedies and shrine. The way Romans got folk medicine was from aborigines of prehistoric Italy and from Etruscans. Only elders, magicians and priest had healing professions. Herbs where the only medicine to used to cure illnesses at first, but herbs only, can't cure illnesses alone though. Some diseases we can get now were also catch able back in ancient Rome, but of course these days we have better equipment and medicines to help fight diseases. It was also known that the ancient Romans had known the procedures of removing the fetus from the uterus, now this procedure is known as abortion. A person that was not always a part of the Roman culture was doctors. Hygiene was more imported to Romans than doctors were. Because of the Romans good hygiene and habits, kept Romans healthy for centuries. The Romans devised the system of public baths and also were credited for the first pay toilet.

Romans were very concerned about there cleanness. The herbs the Romans used as medicine to fight illnesses, is now used for cooking purposes. A thing that helped with menstrual disorders, runny nose, venomous bites and inflammation was Cinnamon, this medicine was very valuable. Besides using herbs and doing rituals to get rid of Roman illnesses, Romans also relied on their gods. What the Romans believed was there were many different gods to treat different illnesses, although this wasn't really true. Romans build temples for these gods to honour them. A goddess that had a foul orders invoked in her name was Mephitis the goddess of putrefaction, her temple was build in a place that released bad fumes that came from the earth.

Ancient Roman Army

The Roman Army first came to the land surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to dominate it. Not much is known if the Roman army was under power of Monarchy. Before monarchy was overthrown, the Roman army was known to become a citizen army, and they did. The Roman army slowly built itself to power and then became a professional army, with professional generals. Around 100BC the army became a superior army with reforms of Gaius Marius. When the army became a superior army Rome was known to be a Military dictatorship. The Roman army was so powerful that they were the ones to choose new Emperors and when to remove them, removing was done by assassination. Becoming an Imperator was a very risky office to hold. The senate actually refused to hold nominations by candidates to become Emperor, so the choice was all up to the army, this decision didn't bring stability to the government. On the end when the army still had ultimate power, Roman Empire broke into two different Empires, soon there was a rivalry between them, warring armies. When all this anger happened, there were only a few Romans left in the army. The main troops that were left in the army were provincial troops, this was due to the practice of placating enemies, by for some reason let them serve the army which then our powered the Roman army.
