Battle of Trenton

On December 25, 1776 the Battle of Trenton gave the patriots of the United States their first victory.

We went into Trenton with 2,400 troops and captured 900 Hessians. We went up against 1,400 Hessians, the greatest troops in the world.

General Washington led the army across the Delaware River and into Trenton at 1:30a.m. Washington surrounded the Hessians and over powered them. Since wars usually stop during the winter and always on holidays, he caught them off guard when they were all intoxicated and sleeping.

General Washington decided to retreat after losing a battle across the Delaware River. He took all the boats so the Hessians couldn't go after them until the river froze so they could walk across. He decided that they should attack while the enemy wasn't expecting it. Not to many people liked the idea but they decided to anyways.

General Washington wanted to be at Trenton by midnight so they planned to leave by 5:00p.m. The soldiers couldn't go across the river fast enough though, all of them got across by 1:00p.m. Washington decided that whenever everyone gets there that would be when they attack. And so they did.

While they were heading towards Trenton they found a guard house, they had to take them down quickly and quietly, so General Washington sent a couple of his men to attack them. There was four Hessians and they killed them all.

When the army got to Trenton nothing was happening, all the men were still sleeping.
