Civil War Weapon Usage

A Essay describing Weapons and how they were used during the civil war.

During the civil war weapons were chosen depending on an individual's needs. Some of the weapons that were used during the civil war were muskets, rifles, sharpshooters, artillery, machine guns, and swords.

The Model 1861 Springfield Musket was the most commonly used shoulder arm during the Civil War. It included a rifle bore, interchangeable parts, a percussion cap ignition system, and it only cost $15-$20. In 1863, an improved model was invented, yet the 1861 model remained the primary weapon of the Civil War. During musket drill, a federal veteran told new recruits, “It's just like shooting squirrels, only these squirrels have guns.”

The Colt repeating rifle was a larger version of the Colt revolver, but it was never as popular. It came in five and six shot models and could fire rapidly. This was because it had a revolver embedded within the rifle which allowed to rifle to shoot as fast as the soldier could pull the trigger. Although it could fire relatively fast, it took longer to load than most other weapons. This was because you had to place a bullet in each of the revolver's breeches. Sometimes Confederate soldiers used this weapon, but it was more common among the Union.

Along with the development of modern weapons came the sharpshooter. This allowed soldiers to accurately fire up to 1800 yards. The primary sharpshooter of the Civil War was known as the Benchrest rifle. It was named this because the weight of the rifle was so great that it was Necessary to fire rested on a bench. Some Confederate soldiers used the Benchrest rifle, but the south preferred the Whitworth Rifle which was imported from England. After the Civil War, the Benchrest rifle was replaced with faster, more accurate weapons.

There were three types of artillery weapons that were used during the Civil War: Guns, howitzers, and mortars. Guns have a straight trajectory and were generally used to penetrate brick or other fortifications. Howitzers had a lower muzzle velocity than guns, and their shells made a slight arc toward the target. Howitzers were used for both direct and indirect firing. They may have caused less damage toward fortifications, but they caused more human casualties. Mortars have a greater arc of flight than guns and howitzers. They had a low muzzle velocity and were generally not used for direct fire. They were usually used to fire over an obstacle such as fortifications or hills. Mortars that were used during the Civil War had a 45 or 50 degree angle. All artillery weapons were powerful and were greatly beneficial during the Civil War.

The Williams breech loading rapid-fire gun was the first machine gun used during combat. It was crank operated, and it could fire a one-pound projectile up to 2000 yards. It was built in 1861, and it was first used during the Battle of Seven Pines. It was operated by a crew of three men. One was in charge of firing and turning the crank; another person placed the paper cartridge into the breech; and the final person placed the percussion cap. The greatest flaw with Williams' gun was that it commonly overheated due to heat expansion.

Although modern weapons, such as guns, were invented, swords and sabers were still commonly used during the Civil War. Swords were used to their full potential at the beginning of the war by cavalry units. Although swords were useful in close combat, they were utterly useless against a rifleman at a distance.

During the civil war weapons were chosen depending on an individual's need. One way that an individual may benefit from this information is that they may understand that technology is constantly evolving. This means that along with human evolution, technology is becoming more advanced by the second. An example of this is transportation. At the beginning of humanity, the only means of human transportation was walking. Now man is able to travel around the solar system with the use of the space shuttle.
