The main entertainment was the amphitheater.
It was the place where thousands of people went to watch fights between: slaves, prisoners of war or criminals and sometimes wild animals. The idea originated as an entertainment at a funeral. There would be two fighters to begin with and the crowd would watch and it grew to a really popular entertainment. The crowds got so big that they ended up making these amphitheaters to hold them during a fight. As it grew and grew schools were made to train special fighters to battle it out in the arena. [Gladiators] The biggest amphitheater was the coliseum which held over 50,000 people. To keep the entertainment going the fights started to feature any animal they could find: elephants, tigers, panthers, giraffes, lions and any other animal were killed.
Another entertainment was the hippodrome.
This place was for the chariot and horse races. The most famous was The Circus Maximus, which held 250,000 people which was ΒΌ of the population of Rome. There was a spine down the middle, made up of fencing to make the laps. There was a lot of betting for their favorite racer. Often there were lots of deaths as it was incredibly hard to control the chariots.
Also another form of entertainment was the theater.
The theaters was like today's theaters but were outside. The actual plays were nothing alike and were full of symbols to keep the crowd active with out causing a disturbance.
