Candy, Candy, Candy
Liquorice, taffy, saltwater taffy, cinnamon hearts at valentines, candy canes at Christmas, candy yardsticks, candy ropes and even candy snakes! Candy, Candy, Candy, it?s all around us! Candy is something we all know how to eat, but do we know how the insider details? And how did it evolve? No, we don?t, at least not yet. I?m here to explain to you the history, types of candy, and even what?s in it.
Candy?s agonizing and foreboding journey through the times started as early as the first man, when he scooped up honey from a bee hive. Yes, it was very primitive, and I don?t think the bees would be pleased! Then came the Egyptians, along with the Arabs and Chinese, improved Mr. Caveman?s idea by inserting fruits and nuts and encrust them with honey. It was still only a few steps from primitive, but it did the job to serve Egyptian sweet tooths! As the ages elevated, the Middle Ages saw many improvements in candy and gave birth to, Rock Candy. A sugary candy easy to make yet very good. Unfortunately, sugar was expensive back when, and was only really intended for the wealthy. Candy comes in different types, from caramels, chocolate, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, hard fruity candies, and just chewy and nutty ones. Cacao hit hard when it was discovered in 1519 and it?s scientific name is called ?Theobroma Cacao? which ironically meant, ?food of the gods?.
Cacao is what is in your plain Jane chocolate, higher end chocolate has more cacao. It was unfortunately still expensive and not really available to the masses. Richard Cadbury developed the affordable Valentines Day heart box of chocolates in 1868. The average candy is made mostly of: gelatin, sugar, artificial flavours and colours, and some minerals. Whatever chocolate or candy you like, from sweet luscious ones to chewy ones, to elegant truffles. They all have something in common, they all cause painful cavities! So it?s generally better to brush after eating. Oh, I?m getting off-topic again! Whatever candy you like, that?s fine, but at least now you know some good tidbits! So, candies are great, candies are sweet, and you?d probably like em? better than your typical meat!
