History of Ninevah

Nineveh was a very important city long ago. It has many mound ruins. It was located on the eastern bank of the Tigris River.

Nineveh was an important city because of the Tigris River. It was used to trade and many invaders came through the river. It is said to be the worship city of Isatar. Many people say that the Assyrian monarchy government had built this city long ago. Nineveh was an ancient piece of land which existed in the time Jonah lived in. There were many rulers which made Nineveh what it was. It was a great city in which many people lived in. After a time of great happiness Nineveh had fallen in 612 BC. There were many battles between different empires which took place in Nineveh. Some of the great city, Nineveh still exists today. These structures which lasted years give archaeologists evidence and much more learning experience. The Assyrians had taken over Nineveh, but still many other empires such as Persia and Rome may have taken over. We still don’t know much about the people, but we do know is what was written in the Bible. Its location can be seen because it is marked by two very large mounds. These mounds are called Kouyunjik and Nabi Yuknus. Nineveh was said to have been build on these two mounds according to archaeologists.

Sennacherib was said to have build this city. He made nice looking streets and palaces through the city. When Nineveh was going down it was being ruled by the Assyrians and when it fell it was attacked by the Medes. Nineveh faded away during the times, but was mentioned again at the battle of Nineveh. This battle made this city come up again. Nineveh was known to many Catholics for its story of Jonah. Jonah lived in this city of Jonah and he was called upon God to deliver a message. Jonah said no to God because the city he was supposed to go preach to was the enemy of his city of Nineveh. At the end Jonah went and preached the news of God. In Nineveh still today archaeologists are still trying to figure more ways out to get more and more evidence so that we know and learn more about this great city of Nineveh. This city was popular during the old times. Archaeologists have found tablets in which they gained more information of the city of Nineveh. Jonah is honored today in the Muslim religion. They have whale bones representing the story of Jonah In which they think that no one should forget.
