Indian Removal Act

Some info on the Indian removal act.

Before white English settlers came to America, Native Americans had long since made their homes here. However, President Andrew Jackson wanted to expand further west. After pressuring the congress, the congress passed the Indian Removal Act. This act authorized the removal of Indians who lived east of the Mississippi river.

Although the Supreme Court ruled that the Indians were their own separate nation, Andrew Jackson decided to ignore the Supreme Court and move them anyway. After nagging the congress, they passed a bill called the Indian Removal Act. This authorized troops to march Indians to a section of land which is now Oklahoma called Indian Territory. The escorts for the Indians were part of a group called the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Many of the Indians resisted and had to be led in chains.

I think that if we hadn't planned on expanding “from sea to shinning sea,” then the people would have protested against this. If it would to happen in the present day America, the president would most likely be impeached. It is unfair that the people who got here first had to move, but if they hadn't, some might have been hostile and there could have been a war. Even if the land was spread evenly, the growing nation of America would soon probably swallow up the Indians.
