Middle Ages

The Middle Ages can best be described as the age of faith because of the devotion to the church shown by people.

The best example of this idea is the Crusades, the Pope called for a crusade to the holy land and any Catholic Knight and Noble who could respond. The church ruled most of Europe during the Middle ages and even put kings on thrones. Most nobles made decisions based on the church and what the Pope thought was correct.

During the Middle Ages there was a great spread of Christianity in Europe. Contributing to this was the Christian missionaries throughout England and the Mediterranean. Based on the insert from The Dark Ages byTony Gregory there was many monks who left everything behind and devote their life to the church. This shows how powerful the church was during the middle ages that people would devote their life to expanding the Christian faith. Another way Christianity was spread by monks during the middle ages was based on the words of a middle ages monk. The Middle Ages monks gave up their Family, possessions, and will to help the will of God to spread Christianity. The only purpose a monk had was to convert men and women of the middle ages to Christianity to strengthen the Church.

The Church during the Middle Ages had a immense amount of wealth. Show by the diagram of a Christian knight during the crusades in Knights by Andrea Hopkins. This shows the supplies the church was able to contribute to the effort of the Crusades. Another way the church was very wealthy during the middle ages was the size and architecture of the churches show by the picture of a gothic cathedral in Europe during the middle ages.

Anyone entering a town or city would immediately see the church. This show the amount of funds the church had to construct the great cathedrals of the middle ages and also the man power the church was able to contract to raise a building of this size during a age of so little technology.

Lastly the stained glass of the Christian churches show the great wealth of the church based on the picture of stained glass and the insert from knights by Andrea Hopkins. Glass was very hard to make and stained glass required a great deal of skill and money so this show how the church was very wealthy and powerful during the middle ages.

As the documents show the middle ages could be called the age of faith because of the large following and great achievements of the Roman Catholic Church. This lead to spread of Christianity and the long term survival of the Christian faith. Most of middle age Europe was dominated by the church and Controlled by the Pope.
