Ranks in Early American Society

Facts about Women's Rights in early American society.

The three lowest ranks in America were white women, indentured servants, and slaves. Even though they are very different people and lead different lives in the south they are very similar.

First of all, they all did some type of physical labor. The white woman worked both indoors and outdoors. Whether it was working in the fields or making dinner for the family they were always occupied. Indentured servants were usually young white men. This meant that they would be forced to work outside in the fields or making repairs on broken tools throughout the plantation. Slaves were just plantation workers who worked long hours outside. They worked from sun up to sundown everyday. About ninety percent of the time they worked in the fields. This shows that they all are similar in the way or doing labor, but different in the labor that they did.

Secondly, they all had limited rights and no political power. The white woman could not get divorced from their husbands. Their husbands could only divorce them. White woman also could not inherit property from their deceased husbands. Indentured servants are the step right above being a slave. They had no rights at all basically, except they could eventually lead their own lives. Slaves had absolutely no rights. They were just a piece of property owned by the plantation master. They had absolutely no status in society. This shows that they all had very limited rights and no political rights, but that they all were limited in different ways.

Finally, all three ranks in society were not free. White woman were not free. They just worked for other plantation owners to make money. Their husbands basically owned them. Indentured servants are not free for a term of 3-6 years and then they become free to lead their own life. This occurs once they are don't paying back their debt to the plantation owner. Slaves were not free at all. They also could never become free. Even their children were born into slavery. There was absolutely no way to escape it unless you ran away to Canada or moved west. This is how all of them were not free, but they had different freedoms.

A few more things that they have in common are that they are uneducated, controlled by plantation owners, have a harsh life, and struggle to live. As you can see, white woman, indentured servants, and slaves are very different, but have various things in common.
