The Texas Revolution was a war between Texas and Mexico. It all started when the United States bought the Louisiana Territory. The United States argued that Texas was part of the Louisiana Territory, but Spain disagreed.
Very few people lived in Texas. About 3,000 of them were Tejanos, or Mexican citizens that lived in Texas. Native Americans also lived in Texas, including Comanche, Apache, and Kiowa tribes. In 1823 to 1825, Mexico passed three laws. Each law gave new settlers large tracts of land for low or reduced taxes. In return, settlers learned to speak Spanish, become Mexican citizens, become Catholics, and obey Mexican law. Americans in Texas eventually outnumbered Mexicans, and the Americans didn't adopt Mexican ways.
The Mexicans didn't like that, so they issued a decree that stopped American immigration. The decree also encouraged Mexican and European immigration to Texas with generous land grants. Trade between Texas and the United States was discouraged, and a tax was put on goods imported from the United States. This angered the Texans. Mexicans also banned slavery from Texas, which angered the colonists that had slaves.
Before Mexico had changed things, a man named Stephen F. Austin brought over 300 American families to Texas. They lived mostly along the Brazos River. He became the leader among American settlers in Texas. Austin was also the spokesperson for Texas, even when he disagreed with them. He served a year in prison when he told the Mexican government that Texas wanted to become an independent state. When the war ended and Texas became a state, Austin ran for president. He was defeated and died a few months later. In his honor, Austin became the capital of Texas.
Stephen F. Austin went to talk to the Mexican president Santa Anna. He said that American settlers should be let back into Texas. He did let the Americans back in, but that didn't make Santa Anna a good person. He overthrew the Mexican Constitution of 1824 and Texans felt betrayed. Then, Santa Anna put extra control over Texas, which angered them.
The Alamo was home to converted Christian Native Americans before the war, in the 1700s. Texans and Tejanos occupied the Alamo as the first step to Texas independence. It wasn't designed for military purposes, but the Texan militia stayed there to keep Mexicans out. The Mexicans attacked the Alamo in February 1836. It took thirteen days, and the Mexicans killed almost all of the Texan militia.
Jim Bowie was one of the men who fought at the Alamo. He was a reckless adventurer. Bowie was well known for being bold and fearless. He led the Battle of Conception and the battle in San Antonio. At the Alamo, Jim Bowie shared the authority with William Travis. After the war, he died of pneumonia on March 6, 1836.
The Alamo was important because Texas won its independence. It was also important because many heroes came out of it. Although many people died during the Texas Revolution, Texas still became an independent state.
