The Constitutional Convention

A description about the Constitutional Convention and the issues which it resolved.

During the course of the Constitutional Convention, many improvements, and new ideas have been put forth to form a better government for the United States. As a result of the convention, there are many new aspects to the government, some of which may seem similar to the British rule we just escaped. Let me reassure you, however, that there are numerous limitations of the power that any one person can grasp, which will prevent us from befalling into what we worked so hard to escape.

One major question that arose was whether or not the national government or individual states should have more power. This issue was the key to developing a stable government which would be able to stand for a long time, while keeping the country together, and guaranteeing equal say, and protection of rights. I am glad to tell you that the decision was to have a strong national government in which each sate would have an equal say, and the inalienable rights of citizens will be protected. I truly believe that this will benefit everyone in the country, making us more united, and giving the country more strength.

Another issue that was discussed was in regards to states representation in Congress. The question was; should representation in Congress be equal for all states or based on population? The outcome was the decision that each state has equal representation, and it is not based on population. This puts each state on a level playing field, so there will be no disputes on who has more slaves, whether or not to count slaves, etc. The third issue, asking whether slavery and the slave trade should be allowed to continue, resulted in the outlawing of both. Although South Carolina wanted both to continue, the majority felt that it would serve best to prohibit both.

Finally, the fourth issue decided whether there should be a strong president or not. Most states agreed that in order to stay away from the type of government we managed to free ourselves from, the president must not be too powerful. This way, with his power limited, there will be no way for the president to become the one, all powerful leader of the country.

As you will see, the Constitutional Convention has created some very significant changes to the country's government. Starting off with the weak Articles of Confederation, we now have a more stable and secure government that will serve the country well and provide a strong base for the future.
