The Spanish Influenza

The Spanish influenza of 1918 was a very serious pandemic that resulted in over 20 million deaths worldwide.

The virus caused hemorrhaging that filled the lungs and in some cases they developed pneumonia and many other side effects. All public places were ordered to close by the Governor of Colorado, a proclamation by the mayor of Durango, and the secretary of the State Board of Health due to the rapid spread of the virus. As a precaution the army had to wash dishes with boiling water to kill any bacteria that may be on them. Cities through out the world were being asked to wear masks by the Red Cross and they were sold at 10 cents a piece.

I would be for using masks. Since there was a deadly virus spreading very fast and a mask could help prevent you from getting it, what do you have to lose other then your life? People that didn't wear masks had a higher chance of getting the virus. They were only ten cents too so they were easily affordable. I don't think they should make people wear them because it is there choice to help themselves but I definitely think it would be a wise idea.

Communities in general have been affected a lot. People in communities are dying and many were ill. Public places that people needed such as food stores and schools were being shut down even if they weren't contaminated. There was pandemonium in the hospitals and the Red Cross was involved. There were all new rules in communities like in college they made rules such as any student cannot visit a private house off campus. The county of La Plata made a rule saying you couldn't leave the county in any way without permission from an athorative figure.

People are battling the disease not only with masks but with new rules and closings. Public schools were being closed due to the crowded space of children that could spread it to each other rapidly. Barbershops were closed because of shared blades to cut hair and unsanitary conditions made an easy place to multiply the influenza. Hospitals were crowded trying to help people with the influenza and medicines were prescribed to people for the side effects. People were using boiling water to clean things to try and kill the virus.

I was wondering a few things like how the students were schooled if they were and was there a cure of some sort? Also, if the masks were very effective in preventing the influenza? I found it fascinating how fast the influenza spread all around the world and how it killed over twenty million people in such a short time
