There are many reasons for the Civil War, for instance the different views on slavery, the failure to compromise, and economy and industry. The south and north went to war in April 1861 and during this war over 600,000 soldiers combined from both sides died all due to an inability to agree.
A major issue between the north and south was their differing views on slavery. Doc. G expresses the north's opinion on slavery saying that they are American slaves and that for them celebrating the 4th of Jul was a sham because Americans are celebrating their freedom and the slaves are not free. The north felt that felt that slavery was a great injustice due to how badly the slaves were mistreated.
Doc. H shows the south's opinion saying that the slaves have the easiest lives of anyone in America. The south believes that the slave's lives are easy because they are provided with everything they need to survive and only having to do a minimal amount of labor. Their differing views was one of the causes of the war, but it is only one of many.
Another cause was their failure to compromise. Doc. L shows that the south thought that free slaves should not be involved in politics. The north believed that they should be involved according to the 5th amendment. Doc K shows how Sumner attacks pro-slavery men. It is clear to see that neither side can get along or compromise.
One of the final causes for the war was the south's dependency on cotton for their economy. Doc A shows that without the slaves their economy would suffer tremendously. Their cotton industry would also suffer due to the lack of slaves. Although the south needs the slaves the north says that slavery is wrong and they must free their slaves. The south felt that they could not stop because their simple lives would become difficult.
What caused the Civil War, I believe it was slavery. The sides could not compromise and because of this 600,000 men died. If the south had only thought of others instead of putting themselves first the slaves would be free and the Civil War would have never existed.
