Wounded Knee in 1890 and 1973

Wounded Knee was a conflict between the United States army and the Sioux Indians near Wounded Knee creek in South Dakota.

On the morning of December 29, 1890, the Sioux chief Big Foot and some 350 of his people camped on the banks of Wounded Knee Creek and the US troops charged and them and began the war.

In December 1890 police entered a Lokata reservation to arrest Sitting Bull, who had been spreading the ghost dance among the people in Lakota. Later there was news that Bull was shot accidentally and killed.

Bull's dead upset the Indians and they fled form the reservation. The Indians were preparing to surrender on December 29. The troops were keeping eye on them and the Indians were giving up their guns. A shot was fired from somewhere and the troops started firing wildly and the Indians fought back. When the fight was finished and the smoke was cleared 300 Native Americans were dead and 25 US troops were dead too and it ended the ghost dance movement.

The Indians were discussing the problem that they were dealing with in 1968 and they decided that the conflict would take place in Feb27, 1973. AIM or American Indian Movement helped them and they controlled the place for 71 days. The fight was a great victory for the Sioux Indians but it didn't last for long. After 71 days the government arrested a lot of Indians and it was end for them.

The Indians had to go through a lot of problems. The Indians were never free and people pushed them away and they left the culture. More population is increasing in the United States and the Indians were having a hard time. You can't see no more Indians and they are very rare to find now because the way they were treated made them disappear.
