1. You can’t throw out the fruitcakes in your house because they are your relatives.
Sometimes balancing the demands of your extended family can be impossible. You may have to do what is best for your own family, and stop worrying about making everyone happy.
2. Your credit card is at your spending limit.
You don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a great Christmas. Set a spending limit and stick to it. The warmth of spending time with your family is what makes the holidays special.
3. You wake up in the morning singing “Grandma Got Ran Over By a Reindeer”.
Enough said.
4. You are ready to shoot the next dancing Santa you see.
Find positive ways to relieve your stress. You may need to take a break and find time for yourself. On the other hand, you may feel better about the holidays if you give to those less fortunate. For example, you might collect toys for needy children or serve a meal at a homeless shelter.
5. You have five Christmas parties this week.
Celebrating the holidays with friends and family can be fun and exciting. However, it is easy to get overbooked. Be realistic about your schedule.
6. You are having a “Blue Christmas”
For most people, the holidays are a time of joy and celebration. However, for some people is it a difficult time of the year. You may benefit from counseling if you are experiencing sadness and anxiety.
7. You have gained 5 pounds by December 2.
People frequently gain weight during the holidays. Try eating a light snack, such as fruits and vegetables, before going to a party. High calorie food may not be as tempting if you are not hungry.
8. Your wife comes to bed every night wearing musical reindeers.
Christmas brings out the child in some people. You may have to get your own reindeer shirt and join the party.
9. You have so many Christmas lights you don’t know how you are going to pay your electric bill.
It is ok to scale back. You do not have to keep up with the neighbors.
10. You look forward to December 26 because you too tired to enjoy Christmas.
Simplify your holiday celebration. There was one busy Christmas when we were not looking forward to our usual preparations. Instead we bought a small tree and put a few ornaments on it. We still have warm memories of that simple Christmas.
Many people experience stress during this time of the year. This is a good time to examine your expectations and activities. You may find yourself enjoying the season more by doing less.
