Beginning today, Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday, the period of Lent is here. While many people know what Lent is, what's its importance and more importantly, why do some people celebrate it and some don't. Well, I'm going to give you a sneak insight on what Lent is and the historical significance with it.
Lent is a western Christianity religion in which for a certain amount of time, you are to give up something. Something that means a lot to you. This suppose to represent self-control and during Lent many years ago, the time you would have used eating (or whatever you choose to give up), you would praise and pray to God. For some, this means praying when you would normally be having sex. Now, it is becoming more common to see people spending more time with someone or donating money throughout this time. During this time, it was thought to be bringing you closer to God before his death on the cross and resurrection (which then brings Lent to a close).
Lent is a rather beautiful time because it declares a somewhat beginning of spring and life. Normally, I myself wouldn't celebrate Lent. I don't consider myself a devout Christian but I did grow up under the rulings of an Independent Baptist church. But this year, I've decided I am going to give up a couple things to prove to myself once again, that I have self control. I believe I am going to give up eating after dusk and biting my nails (which is a horrid habit, believe me). I would give up meat also, but that last time I was vegetarian ended up disaster. I practically died. But that's for another blog. Happy Lent and I hope if you choose to give up a common luxury, you prevail through the period. Good luck!
