My Christmas Checklist

Christmas will never be the same if we put some spices into it that will allow us to remember others and not just our selves.

People around the globe are busy preparing for the yuletide season. Some save money and spend it on a single day - Christmas! And some people visit stores few months before December to shop for gifts intended for special someone.

On the other hand, without the exception of adults, children make their lists of “what to buy” on Christmas day because most stores are on sale during the yuletide season. On the spiritual aspect, Sunday services are observed in different churches days before Christmas. These are just few observations among the many preparations that people do for Christmas.

However, are these not worn-out self-centered traditions? Christmas happens every year and a number of significances had been enumerated for its “true” importance whereby, few were able to heed it in their heart. Come to think for example of those who exercise giving, only on Christmas day because according to others, Christmas is a time to give and share. Can it not be Christmas every day so that someone would always be there to give to those who are in need?

Another is that, Christmas is a time to forgive and forget those who had wronged us. Can that be only done on Christmas? Can we make it a point to just remember and make every single day a Christmas day so that we'll always be reminded to:

  • Forgive those who had hurt us;
  • Give/share to those who are in need;
  • Humble our selves because He who was born in a manger humbled himself to save mankind;
  • Ppray for others and not always for our selves; and
  • Think of others more than of our selves.

How wonderful would it then be, if everyone thinks it is Christmas every day! The world would be better to live in because people are not just busy working for themselves but most especially for the welfare of others.

Making it Christmas every day would help us to consider the status of our neighbors and/or of other people. We help develop something that would encourage others to live a life filled with hope despite of life's adversities. Inner strength is revitalized and built to face any setbacks which would therefore drive someone to continue his quest.

Would it not be fulfilling to see someone's face filled with joy because we were there to remember and consider his situation? As Christmas day is fast approaching, each is busy with his checklist on what gifts to give and things to do.

However, the significance of Christmas is best displayed and exercised when each one remembers to put in their checklist the real meaning of Christmas and practice it everyday. Otherwise, Christmas would just be spent on food and material things.

I used to make my children all volunteer with the Salvation Army's Angel Tree program. It is nice to know that there are others out there, who recognize the importance of helping others on the holiday.
