The History of Halloween

Where Halloween and all of it's traditions came to be.

We know Halloween to be a day of fun for kids and adults alike. But do any of us know how Halloween came to be?

Halloween and all it's traditions began a long time ago. It was the Druids belief that every year, on October 31, the spirits of the dead would roan the earth. To protect themselves from any kind of mean pranks from the evil spirits, they lit bonfires to keep them away. They also offered them good things to eat. The Druids, also thought that if they disguised themselves as something else that they would fool the spirits into thinking that they were one of them, and leave them alone. This is where we get our tradition of dressing up and going trick or treating. Not to mention that dopey song that we all love to sing, "Trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat".

Another tradition that we've gotten from the Druids is the fall harvest. In celebration of fall, they celebrated fall almost the same way we do today. The leaves, corn, apples, cornstalks, as well as everything else that goes around with fall. It was also what they offered up to the spirits.

Later on, the Roman Catholic Church however, made the first day of November the day of "All Saints" to give honor to all of them especially those who do not have a special day set aside for them. They called the day before All Saints Day (Halloween) All Hallows Eve. The word Hallowd means the holy ones. Hence the the word Halloween: The eve of All Saints.
