We all have great expectations
Most of us as we get closer to Christmas have a lot of expectations that surround the holidays and the feast of the Savior`s birth. Because we remember so many Christmas celebrations past we have good memories, sometimes sad ones, and much to look forward to. Women especially remember what worked well for the family last year or years before. One wonders if the former spirit of Christmas can be repeated this year.
Christmas of old
However the Christmas celebrations I remember as a child, then later in the USA or in Tanzania, East Africa were all quite different from one another. I remember the nostalgia, the trees, the good times we had as a family and the feeling of being far away in the US or East Africa. So for me the memories are mixed and from three continents. Today I am happy to be with my community and to have a more or less old fashioned Christmas celebration. The tree goes up just about the last day before the feast. The aroma of freshly baked Christmas cookies is at certain times giving a feeling of anticipation.
Christmas 2007
Yet each celebration is different for us. I believe this is so because we have grown each year a bit closer to the understanding of the mystery that is Christmas. The peace, the joy, the prayers and hymns and songs we remember from long past years. We are also more mature. We know it is not the gifts we get or give, but the love and peace in our heart that count most.
And we are no children any longer, we do not only expect lots of presents but the warmth and kindness of one another during the holidays.
We celebrate the birthday of the Son of God
It would be nice if we could keep some of this spirit of Christmas also throughout the year. It would make the world a much better place to live in. Alas we have learned from years past that the spirit of Christmas lasts only as long as our body and soul can relax around the fireplace. When we turn again to our daily business we are once more in the rough and tumble of our life. Let us remember to take Christ along into this Christmas season. He is the reason for the season. Let us share our love with those near and dear to us and others who may need our love just as much .
