What is Memorial Day? Is it a day off from work or school? Or is it a day of inconvenience because many places of business are closed? Is it a day to get drunk? How about a cookout? The truth is; many Americans don't know what we are honoring on Memorial Day.
Memorial Day is a Federal holiday that is observed on the last Monday of May. It used to be known as Decoration Day. The holiday commemorates United States men and women who died during military service to their country.
A lot of people are disregarding Memorial Day because they don't agree with the war. Throwing aside personal beliefs about whether or not we should be in Iraq, and 911, shouldn't we all be just a bit more appreciative of the young men and women who laid down their lives for our right to express our disagreement?
There are countries where citizens have no rights, so in our wonderful land of freedom, I don't understand how it is possible to dismiss the efforts of our fallen heroes. This Memorial Day, I plan to spend the day with my children, telling them about their grandfather and his Navy stories. We will cookout, and I'll probably have a drink, but not before I remember why I'm celebrating.
