Abortion: A Drastic Solution to Population Growth

The one and only way abortion cannot be considered a crime is when the life of a mother is endangered by the dying fetus in her womb. This is known as critical abortion. Other than that, abortion is a crime, murder, and a sin.

Three alleged abortionist were arrested by the agents of National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in the Philippines on July 6, 1990. The three, compose of two doctors and a medical student have been allegedly performing abortion for several years. Charges of Illegal Practice of Medicine and Attempted Abortion under Article Number 256 of the Philippine Revised Penal Code then were filed against the three suspects. The offense if proven guilty is punishable by six years imprisonment.

Abortion is the intentional taking of human life. Most religious sects and organization condemn this practice. Teenagers consider this as a solution to early pregnancy while if the common law be applied, it is murder.

Pius IX, in 1869, ordered excommunication for women who would undergo abortion at any stage of pregnancy. The Roman Catholic Church further theorized that the fetus becomes human from the moment of conception. In 1917, the Canon Law specifically regarded abortion as a “reserved sin” and it can only be absolved by Pope or Bishops.

Pat Robertson, former US statesman and founder of internationally broadcast TV program The 700 Club, recalls that all through the Old Testament, women longing for children. Children were consider a gift from God. He strongly feels that abortion is killing.

Dr. Willke, in his “Handbook on Abortion,” says: “The sperm has life, the ovum has life… when the two join we have at that instant created a new living being.” He believes from a biological standpoint that human life begins even before conception.

Two hundred and twenty well-known doctors from the US have written an article in 1971 entitled, “Abortion: The Medical Evidence Against.” Here are some excerpts from that article: “From conception, when the sperm and egg unite, the child is a complex, dynamic, rapidly growing organism… by the 20th day, the foundation of a child's brain and entire nervous system is established… the child is much a child in those several days after…”

The Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith issued a Declaration on Abortion in 1974, stating that: “In reality, respect for human life is called from the time that the process of regeneration begins. From the time that the ovum is fertilized, a life begun… It would never be made human if it were not already human.”

But one Jesuit priest Joseph Donceel contested and said: “There can be no mind before the organism is ready to carry one and no spirit before the mind is capable of receiving it… no human person during the first few weeks of pregnancy, as long as the embryo remains in the vegetative stage of its development.”

On August 22-31, 1974, a Population and Economic Conference were held in Bucharest, Rumania. Five thousand delegates as representatives of member nations attended this United Nations Conference. Their major concern then is how to prevent the population of the world doubling within the span of the generation from 1980-2000. Back then it was already a major problem and concerned outlined by Hon. Kurt Waldheim, then Secretary-General of UN during the opening of the conference.

In that same conference, socialist countries like China and Algeria do not give priority on the reduction of births but to economic boom and fairer redistribution of wealth. Likewise Argentine and many African and Latin American countries refused to slow down their birth rate. According to them, they have a profitable large resources and spaces to be used in case of population explosion.

On the other hand Canada and some other Western countries with Sweden and US were in all out support in the reduction of births, especially in the developing countries. They even recommended abortion and sterilization as possible means in the reduction of birth rate.

Statistic shows that in US every 1000 women have had an abortion. For a period of eight years from 1966, there were 8000 abortions recorded and it increased in 1974 to 400,000 records of abortion and continues to grow. In the Philippines, their statistic revealed that there are at least 300 abortions every week.

If abortion be considered as a remedy to the rapid population growth, then the people will become self-made criminals. Religion and science agree that when sperm and egg cells unite, it is the beginning of life itself. Therefore, abortion is a crime, murder and a sin. The one and the only way abortion cannot be considered a crime, is when the life of a mother is endangered by the dying fetus in her womb, this is known as “critical abortion.”

The child has the right to be born!
