There is a public controversy about adopting African babies because of the celebrities in the news, Angelina and Madonna. (Perhaps there is some symbolism in their names.)
Nevertheless, whites have been adopting African babies for centuries, and the various forms of the adopting, including slavery and colonialism, economic and other, postcolonialism and postmodern colonialism, have always been controversial. However, these adopting Africans have not necessarily been celebrities, and many have not been as enlightened about the subject as some of these contemporary celebrities are, or appear to be.
Certainly Madonna, the most controversy, has proven to be very good at defending her right to adopt African David. Angelina, praised and celebrated for her adoption by the media, has not had to defend her integrity and her good motives.
Hower, this adopting of black babies a controversy not only for whites but for blacks, mainly because of the history of white colonialism that all know about. This is the true controversy.
Suppose blacks wanted to adopt white babies? That would be true controversy. Of course, there probably has been the informal adoption of white babies by blacks.
Much of the informal adoption of white babies by blacks has been in the form of "Nigger Jim" adopting the white baby in the famous novel by Mark Twain.
Many young whites who get to know blacks and their parents allow them to play with black children and meet their parents find out that there is an information adoption of the some of these little white babies.
Also, when black domestics raise white babies there is a sort of informal adoption that people who know black parents know about.
Perhaps there is also the informal adoption of black babies by white parents when their children play with black children.
This is another type of social history.
However, the controversy is because it's public and these are celebrities, and their adopting black babies can inspire others.
Even the Chinese who are now considering investing in Africa might find themselves adopting African babies and some of these African in the traditional African manner might find themselves adopting Chinese babies.
When human beings start thinking more on the metaphysical and spiritual levels, this is not going to be very controversial. Then we are just going to think of human beings adopting other human beings.
Racism is wrong no matter which race is doing it I read an article a while back called "can only white people be racist?" that addressed the double standard in our society I never understood racism myself, to me people are people and racism is sheer stupidity.
I say Adopt all the african babies you want and give them good homes and loving families, then maybe they will have a hope that impoverished africa cannot offer them
