While most of us are aware that this is African American History month, some folks may not be aware of some famous African Americans who are celebrating birthdays this month.
Singers Roberta Flack, Smokey Robinson, and Bobby Brown all celebrate birthdays this month. One of my favorite actors, the great Sidney Poitier will be blowing out birthday candles this month also. You may remember him from films like “A Raisin in the Sun” and “Guess Who's Coming to Dinner”. Anyone who's never seen those two films should make a point of seeing them. You won't be disappointed. Both are very poignant pieces and masterfully done. Two other actors you may remember are Gary Coleman from the T.V. sitcom “Different Strokes” and Sherman Hemsley from “The Jeffersons”.
February is also the month that three famous athletes were born. They are Hank Aaron of baseball fame, and basketball superstars Julius Erving and Michael Jordan.
There is another African American who was born this month. Her name is Rosa Parks. Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913. You may remember her as the black woman who refused to give up her seat to a white man. At the time, she was arrested and fined. She is considered by many to be a pioneer of the Civil Rights movement. Unfortunately, America lost Rosa Parks in October of 2005. She was 92 years old.
