Canadians of Convenience

What does it mean to be truly Canadian? Not everyone who immigrates to Canada should be granted citizenship, and here's why.

What is a Canadian of Convenience?

Canadians of Convenience are those who immigrate to this country because they want something. They come here and don't really bother to integrate into society. All they want is a Canadian Passport, subsidized postsecondary education for their offspring, and a place with universal health care and old age security for when they retire. They don't actually live here (i.e. they went back "home" to their country of birth as soon as they got their citizenship), contribute to the economy here, nor pay taxes here. But when crap happens (remember the war in Lebanon?) All of a sudden, the Canadian government has to airlift them out of their "home" and bring them back to Canada? Why? I bet they couldn't name all 10 provinces, the first prime minister of Canada, or spell the nation's capital city! Short version: Canadians of Convenience are not real Canadians (And no, not all immigrant Canadians are Canadians of Convenience. Some immigrants are as Canadian as those born here).

Now, regardless of whether or not you are a Canadian of Convenience. As far as I'm concerned, if you're such the world traveler that you're going to foreign countries then you should make a point to know the laws there. Even if you're there because of work instead of on holiday, you should make a point to learn the customs and laws and the consequences of not abiding. Because if you break a law in a foreign country you should be punished as if one of their citizens broke that law. When you're in someone else's house, you have to behave in a manner that is appropriate and acceptable. Not like a spoiled brat in your parents' house. And if this "foreign" nation happens to be your childhood home, then you have no excuse.

It may seem heartless. But I say the government should just leave him there to suffer the consequences of his actions and focus our tax dollars on more useful things. Be they international initiatives or domestic ones. If this was just trial I can see how Canada would be responsible for doing something to get him a fair trial. But he's been found guilty. Everyone knows he's guilty. So why waste our money helping him escape sentence? It is not his constitutional right to be able to kill someone in another country and pay the fine or suffer the consequences in Canadian dollars or by Canadian standards. Bear in mind. I'm saying this because the offence is a murder. It's not someone getting their hands cut off for littering.
