Cheating: The Dangers

An opinion of the dangers of cheating facing all students today.

Cheating is becoming more and more frequent in this generation. Students are aware of the consequences yet they persist in this practice mainly because of fear of a bad grade. In our generation, cheating is considered as more “cool” than diligently studying for a test. Cheating has also become more widespread as students enjoy the exhilarating thrill and satisfaction of not being caught. These students will grow to be our future politicians, lawyers, doctors, etc., and if they don't practice a proper work ethic, which can be detrimental to all our society later on.

Cheating is seriously damaging the cheater themselves even without their realization. Because they cheat and do not learn the material on their own, the cheaters hinder themselves in further tests and classes where the material they skipped is retested. They also become accustomed to cheating, which hinders them even further as they form a dependence on cheating and revert to poor study habits. A regression in study habits will not leaved them prepared for the future. I have had friends and acquaintances that cheat on our tests and do not actually learn the material, and as a result, they fail our final.

Cheating doesn't properly prepare a child for the future as they have not adapted to the hard work and dedication needed to do well in life. A cheater can pass through high school quite easily, but they will be shocked by college about the amount of work needed to pass. Since they are disorientated, some students who had habits of cheating will not be able to successfully adapt or will have tremendous trouble adapting, which will affect their grades. Also, if a student is caught cheating, they suffer severe consequences, such as being kicked out of college or being suspended in public high schools.

This serious issue needs to be dealt with, because the efforts of teachers, parents, and other influential adults in a student's life aren't enough to prevent them from ever cheating. Cheating needs to be more closely monitored and consequences should not be so lenient. Cheating should not be encouraged by students and be seen as a topic for amusement and levity. Students have to be shown that cheating is a serious matter with serious results. For every action there is a consequence, and the consequences of cheating should be emphasized in schools countrywide.

Cheating is becoming a widespread practice, and with the rise of students that are not prepared for the future will have damaging effects on our society. This detrimental practice will also harm the student, although he or she may not be aware of this fact as of now. Cheating is spreading due to the coolness that is associated with cheating and not getting caught, as well as the thrill and entertainment it may provide to some students. If we do not make any efforts now to contain this spread, far worse results may occur.
