Cigarettes and Your Health

Even after Britain's ban on smoking in public places, health and safety are still worrying issues.

Though Britain's smoking ban policy states that smokers can no longer light up in a public building or area. This could easily be looked upon as a case of taking a problem out of one environment and putting it in another. Don't get me wrong I am happy this ban has been put into place, but now even more than ever before, breathing in secondary smoke on the street as pedestrians has become a big problem amongst non-smokers and can still have a serious affect on those who are concerned about their health in regards to passive smoking. For instance, having to sit under the bus shelter waiting for a bus while the person next to you is puffing a cigarette is not my idea of a ban taken seriously. That ' s more like a slap in the governments face and a lack of consideration for those who don ' t smoke.

For the sake of every British citizens health , the government will have to make serious considerations on a complete ban on the use of cigarettes. Overall, smokers themselves are at risk of gum disease, heart disease and lung cancer. Doctors and medical experts have said that cigarettes are linked to a number of other sicknesses, like chronic obstructive and pulmonary disease to name a few. This is because over time the immune is suppressed leaving vital organs vulnerable to all sort of other potential threats.

In the sense of health and safety, It has become noticeable that half used cigarettes are thrown on the floor and left to burn. If something flammable was to catch fire this could raise further health risks. For example bushfires can cause widespread destruction to trees and other plantations if it ' s not tackled early. In Australia, 7% of these fires are caused by people not bothering to put their cigarette butt end out according to a study carried out in Sydney back in 2003. Maybe smoking should be at the top of the governments Eco-friendly list and graded as an environmental health risk right next to the plastic bag issue.
