Discussion on Mental Illness in America

From an Interview/discussion with a friend.

"What are your thoughts on the rise in mental illness in this country?" This was the question I asked to one of my friends on a website I regularly visit, this was his answer which I must say was rather an insight into his own thought processes.

He stated "Depends on which mental illnesses, things like depression, bipolar disorder, and similar emotional illnesses are rarely ever test positive, as people often use them as excuses for their behaviour and doctors use them as excuses to make money. On the other hand, I feel that "illnesses" such as Autism are nothing more than an evolution of the human mind. As for the cause of any mental misbehaviour can be attributed to high levels of nuclear radiation in our atmosphere and pollutants in large cities."

While I do agree with my friend that atmospheric changes may play a role, I strongly believe people all too often act as their own worst instigators, I think stress causes a lot of mental strain. Further on I asked my friend "Do you think mental disorders happen more in men or women at large?" The following was his response,

"So long as humans continue to use a small percentage of their brain, and so long as we continue to repress and fear our own emotions, mental disorders will continue to confuse people to the extent that they have today. I doubt gender has anything to do with the human brain."

He went on to say

"Personally, I haven't met one person in this day and age who doesn't have debilitating personal issues caused solely by stress. When you turn on the news or read the paper, you are assaulted with images and stories of despair, war, poverty, famine, overpopulation, pollution, climate change, the kind of thing that would send a perfectly healthy mentally sound person into a state of depression, or even anger in some cases. Stress is the biggest issue on how society works, and in that respect, we've screwed ourselves over. Get up, go to work, make little money, struggle to eat, sleep for an hour and repeat until you pop."

I responded with this

"My belief is there's still good you just have to know where to look and most people these days are so anxious about the negative they overlook the positive. Agree or disagree?"

His response was as follows

"I agree wholeheartedly that there is still good on this planet, however, I believe that this good is being suffocated by things like egotism, war, religion, and consumerism. The good people like you and myself are left to brood and are often singled out from society through schools and in the workplace. A common philosophy today is that "there is no place for good people when we're too busy worrying about and becoming the bad people."

I pointed out to my friend at this point, since he mentioned religion, that I am Christian, I also stated

"I do however believe there are people who abuse the faith, and that it is such people in their hypocrisy that try to justify their wars and egomania, if people would treat each other with the common, moral, human decency God originally intended, I don't think we'd be in today's mess"

I believe with all my heart that people are their own worst enemies, I believe if people would trust God more like He intended, there'd be a lot less anxiety in the world. God tells us to cast all our cares upon Him.

In closing of this article let me say, I believe if people treated each other with Love and decency, there'd be a lot less stress on individuals because we would all be helping one another, I believe relieving stresses would alleviate much of the mental issues that plague today's world.

People are so quick to blame, beat down and judge that all too often we forget all people are all created beings, flesh and blood, soul and mind. We are all family in essence, whatever our differences may be.

I agree with your article. People need to care for one another and people are growing more and more apart. Matt. 24:12 said that the love of many will wax cold. Love is not everything, but we can not live without it. I\'m praying that God will bring good people together. We need to be around positive things in our lives and positive people. That will help out a lot.
