Look around you at anyone who is under 31 years old, actually anyone born after July 1973. They are survivors of one of the worst epidemics ever to run rampant on the face of the earth. Anyone born after that date could have been killed in their mother's womb. Twenty percent of those who would celebrate their thirty forth birthday this year died this way. The numbers vary from one year to the next but let me use numbers that are representative even though they are not exact. In the most recent year statistics there were just over 4,059,000 live births in the U.S. In that same year there were over 1,200,000 abortions. I understand reality, without abortion, a few of those 1,200,000 babies would have either been miscarried or died at birth but it is reasonable to assume that over 1,150,000 of them would have been born alive. We are killing about 1 in five or over 20% of our children!
There are firebrands want to kill abortion doctors, blow up clinics and intimidate and scare away women seeking abortions. This is against the law of the land and as such is against the law of God.
Others wish to legislate an end to abortion. I doubt this effort will ever bring fruit but I would like to see it if for no other reason to make it illegal to kill babies. Let me just state that the horror stories that are passed about by the pro-abortion forces are just plain lies. They talk of TENS OF THOUSANDS of deaths a year due to back alley abortions. If tens of thousands of women in this age group had died in back alley abortions before Roe V Wade that number for any year in the 60's would have been much higher. In fact about 7,500 women in that range died in 1959 and a about 7,900 in 1998. If the death rate were the same and all of the difference was abortion, the maximum number would be 2000. But the death rate in all groups dropped- if that is applied the number falls to close enough that the only conclusion we can draw is the number is at most a couple hundred, probably less.
Let's look at one of the success stories in this. If you know of other success stories, I challenge you to share them. One I am aware of is the faith based crisis pregnancy center. I'm familiar with one called Human Life Services that is based here in York PA but I know there are like organizations in other areas. This organization provides counseling and REAL help to women in crisis pregnancy situations. Does every pregnant woman who comes to their front door carry the baby to term? No. But most do. Many need just a little help to be able to see how. This is the role HLS plays. It provides help where it is needed.
The church I attend makes a regular contribution to HLS and has for over 15 years. We helped HLS buy the building it is in now. This building that once housed Hillcrest Women's Clinic the abortion provider in the area. Prayer and giving made this possible.
I challenge you to this. If there is such an organization in your area prayerfully consider providing support to it. Let me only spur you to seek God for His will on this. We can save babies and souls, one at a time. Let me conclude with this. Abortion may solve the problem of an unwanted pregnancy. Unfortunately, using the medical euphemism, it has some undesirable side effects. Not infrequent ones include later regrets, guilt, injury to reproductive organs, psychological problems, suicide and even operating room related deaths.
