The principle of this preposterous campaign is that it is immoral to "snitch" on others, no matter what the crime is. At the beginning of the campaign the main focus was to stop criminals from snitching on other criminals in order to get a reduced sentence. Nowadays, it is thought of as immoral to talk to the police even if you witness a crime that you had no part in.
A recent 60 Minutes program shed some light on this terrifying trend. Rapper Cam'ron is one of the pioneers of the stop snitchin' campaign. He has been shot twice and has never cooperated with police. When asked if he would tell the police if a serial killer lived next door, he replied that he would simply move.
This means that Cam'ron's career is more important to him than human life. Frighteningly, he is not the only rapper that feels this way. Busta Rhymes, a prominent rapper, was a witness when one of his security guards was murdered. In fact, there were nearly twenty-five witnesses to the murder. There has not been one single person to come forward to testify.
The scariest part of this whole epidemic is that it is not only rappers who are affected by it. 60 Minutes held an interview with several youth in an inner-city community. They had all witnessed violent crime and none of them had ever spoken to police about it.
“Snitching is a crime in our community,” said one teenage girl.
In the United States, the "clearance rate" is around 60 per cent for murder. This means that 60 per cent of murderers are caught and brought to justice. Due in large part to this campaign, clearance rates in inner-city communities is many times less than ten per cent.
This means that we are basically handing over authority to criminals. If they want to rape, assault, rob or even murder someone, then they certainly are not guilty of anything. It is the person who brings them to justice who should be punished.
Some of these rappers seem to have a fairly good head on their shoulders. Most of them probably have fairly normal IQ's. That is what makes it so hard to figure out. If they had any moral fiber left in their bodies, they would realize that this campaign is costing thousands of lives every year.
Most of the rappers that spout these hateful messages are backed up by powerful record companies. Since the rappers aren't going to stop spreading this filth to the youth of the world, these record companies are the only ones that can put an end to it. By simply not allowing the stop snitching message in the music, they could save lives the world over. However, it doesn't look like they are going to be stopping anytime soon.
Cam'ron was asked if he would put an end to the stop snitchin' campaign if his record company told him to.
"No record company would do that. Ever," he said.
These record companies are basically accessories to murder and are the only ones that can put a stop to this idiotic trend. If they have one moral bone left, they will stand up and start putting human life on a higher regard than money.
