Let me preface this thought with the following
- I love music and I am a fan many of the artists participating in this event.
- I am not a meteorologist, geo scientist, or astrophysicist.
Can some one explain to me the point of Live Earth. I just don't get it. I mean I get what is being peddled; I just don't understand what is hoped to be accomplished from enormous concerts held world wide in the name of global warming.
I understand global warming and I understand the effects of such a phenomenon, I am not an authority on the matter or educated enough on the matter to comment on the degree of severity or impact on the planet earth, but I do know that a bunch of chemically influenced musicians and paid pretenders, I mean actors, are not what is going to change the world's energy consumption.
Lets take a deeper look into this “spectacular” event and see what is really happening. So concert promoters and agents developed this idea to gather some of music's great acts all over the world to put on concerts in the effort to raise awareness on global warming. Ok, that's a fine thought. Lets see though, who is going to go to these concerts - teenagers, young adults and other individuals of oh lets say the liberal persuasion who wish to listen to Al Gore and Alec Baldwin growl their agendas over the microphone. Hey that is fine, if that is your idea a great time, go for it, my point is what fence sitter on the idea of global warming is sitting at home thinking, “Hey I don't fully understand this global warming concept that the media is always talking about, you know I think I will go down to Giants Stadium and see if Jon Bon Jovi can fill me in.” Who are they spreading awareness to? - the trendy feel goods moshing with their shirts of to Metallica who already buy into Al Gore and Leo's inconvenient truth. I thought that the purpose of spreading awareness was to oh I don't know “spread” the awareness.
Now lets look behind the scenes of this musical global movement to conserve energy. I can safely say that these multimillionaire artists are not paddle boating to the venue are they. How many private jets were flown, buses toured, amp wattage burned, and hairdryers blown to put on this event. If they truly wanted to live by the messages they preached, wouldn't they start riding bikes and encourage people to plant a tree rather than burn a few gallons of gas so they can come and stare at them jiggle on stage for a few hours.
Why do I care what these musicians say? Are the Red Hot Chili Peppers studying up on global warming grids and the flux of energy usage over the past decade on their tour bus? I am no rocket scientist but if Flea is more informed than me and the environmental moral compass by which I should align my life, I need to re-examine what I am doing. Also, are you telling me that Fergie Ferg, Alcia Keys, and Kanye West are living a so called “green” lifestyle. Well I guess entourages do after all need to be chauffeured in Escalades sporting 6 mpg. When asked why a music concert, Al Gore said that music is the international language, what language is that? It is not like the lyrics in the artists songs are promoting conserving water by taking short showers or driving economic automobiles, no they sing about cars, money, ice, clubbing, and other “green” things like private jets and Mercedes Benz oh and weed- are those the messages Gore's environmental foundation wants to spread across language barriers?
Now I am not saying that I am driving a hybrid and filtering rain water for multiple uses, or that it is even wrong to strive to do this, but it is a bit condescending and plain stupid that we are listening to a bunch of rich people, who have no idea about actually having to drive a car to and from work each day for a paycheck just so we can have enough money to pay for a house with an air conditioner and the possibility of saving enough money so we can fly to visit family members on the west coast once a year. Actions speak louder that words and so far, all I see is their mouths moving. It all just seems so condescending when these giants of music step out of their ivory towers to gather us so we can listen to their knowledge on the energy crisis and how we need to change.
I think this is just the latest trend in “Hollywood” and the media, the benefit wagon train, pick a cause advertise yourself and your humble generosity. Not to say that global warming is not a real threat or that changes do not need to be made to the worlds energy consumption and sources, because they do, however, it is the IN thing to do right now - to be “Green”. Amazingly Al Gore is hip somehow at long last.
The only thing I think was accomplished by this 07-07-07 global musical pat on the back was broad advertisements for The Police's current tour and the fattening of Al Gore's wallet. And for the record, I still don't understand what Ludicrous rapping about “sipping champagne in first class up in the sky” has to do with correcting global warming.
