Marijuana should be legal in Michigan for anyone over the age of 18. Numerous people see marijuana as an alternate of pain medication to ease pain and suffering. It cost more to keep marijuana illegal then it would cost if it was legal. While marijuana is illegal it also stops certain religious groups from smoking marijuana during worship.
People in Michigan have the right to make up the minds and have the right of free will to chose to smoke marijuana. Everyone always ask the question “Why should marijuana be legalized,” when the should be asking the question, “Why should marijuana be illegal?” From a philosophical point of view, individuals deserve the right to make choices for themselves. The government may have the right to limit the right of choice only if it endangers others while marijuana is substantial lower then the danger of alcohol and tobacco.
Some may say that while under the effects of marijuana you are unable to do things while many smoke or use marijuana to ease the pain or suffering and don’t have any side effects other then the pain is gone, for example Irvin Rosenfeld age 54, from fort Lauderdale smokes more than half-dozen joints at his job of being a stockbroker he handles millions of dollars’ in clients’ holdings.(Armour) In 2002, two parliamentary committees heard from a wide array of experts and lobbyists. The commons committee concluded that penalties for simple possession were disproportionately harsh; the Senate committee stated that marijuana was a gateway to harder drugs such as crack-cocaine.
There are about the same reasons why marijuana should be illegal as there is reason why marijuana should be legal. Marijuana use can lead to poor motivation syndrome and increased rates of schizophrenia and depression. Its use can lead to lung diseases such as asthma, emphysema and even lung cancer. In addition, marijuana is a gateway drug. Physicians treat thousands of patients for illnesses related to drug abuse. Almost all say their drug use started with pot smoking. The use of marijuana needs to be discouraged to protect individual and community health, not encouraged by legalizing the production, use, exchange and sale of the drug.
