Only in America

A rant about immigration.

America is a retarded place. Don't get me wrong, I love my country and have served to defend it but there is something seriously wrong here. I am sure you are thinking I am going to go on about gas prices and the rising cost of food but I am not. What I am about to discuss has been a hot issue for a few years now and doesn't seem to be going away.

My co-worker and I were looking up something on a website. The landing page for the website wanted you to choose what region and language you fit into. The choices for regions were as follows:

  1. Canada
  2. Deutschland
  3. United Kingdom
  4. United States

Seems harmless right? When you hover over the country you are presented with your choice of language. Here is what you were given to choose from:

  1. English and French
  2. German
  3. English
  4. English and Spanish

Spanish? This is an option for the United States? The last time I checked we spoke English here. Granted it isn't the Queen's English but it is still English. Has America gotten to the point where Spanish is an actual choice of native language? This makes me absolutely sick to my stomach.

Spanish is not America's language. Spanish is spoken in Mexico the last I checked. Mexico is not a part of the United States but that can be argued with our current situation. Mexicans are over taking our country with the promise of better wages and health benefits. They take jobs that we are too lazy to do for wages lower than a typical American thinks they deserve. So it is our fault we are in this situation.

Everyone talks about securing our borders and getting strict on immigration but nothing has been done. Several billion dollars was recently wasted on a virtual fence idea that didn't quite work out. Immigration isn't even a hot topic with our current presidential candidates. It has been discussed but it takes a back seat to our economic crisis and the Iraq war.

It is pretty sad when I see a headline at CNN about immigrants not being able to send money back to Mexico due to rising gas prices. Here is an idea, how about spending that money you earn here in America? Sending the money to another country does not benefit the country that pays your salary and gives you medical care.

I'm tired of seeing signs in stores written in Spanish. I am tired of not understanding cashiers at fast food restaurants. I have no problem with people coming to America in search of a better life but you need to learn the language and do your part in strengthening this country. I have been to other countries and no where did I see signs written in English to help us out. Very few restaurants had English menus and people expected us to speak their language. Why are we being so accommodating?

America is seriously broken and unfortunately I do not know what it will take to fix it. I don't think our elected leaders do either. We have let this great nation deteriorate for far too long and now it is too late to fix it.

Exactly. Immigration is a big problem here and needs to be fixed. Unfortunately I do not know what to do to fix it either and we have to hope the people we elect do something.

Never mind that without such illegal immigrants, a great many _AMERICAN_ business would come to a stand still...

I mean, I get your point, but English isn't America's language either.

Granted, it's what the majority of us speak, but the US has no official language. You can't legally force people to speak ANY language. It all falls under the idea that the US is a free country and no one would be repressed based off of their culture, religion, or abilities. The fact of the matter is is that letting immigrants speak Spanish is more American than forcing them to speak English.

I know, it's hard understanding the fast food cashier. Honestly, just get over it. Do you want to work at a fast food restaraunt? If they're willing to do a job you don't feel like doing, then you'll have to deal with how they do it. If you want English speaking cashiers at McDonald's, fill out an application.

I bet the Native Americans thought the Pilgrams sounded funny and were hard to understand, too.

Let me give you an example. If you move to Germany in hopes for a better life would you go around speaking English hoping the natives learn your language or would you take the time to speak the native tongue? The problem is a lot of immigrants do not take the time to learn English. They know enough to get by. If they want to speak Spanish, fine, but we as a nation should not coddle them by making signs in Spanish just because they can't read English. If they want to survive in this country then speak the language. The time I spent overseas I made sure I either had someone with me who knew the language or I had a translation dictionary because other countries do not put up signs in alternate languages (some of the more touristy places do).

Hopefully the bills currently sitting in the House of Representatives gets passed to make English our official language.

A very valid point -- don't get me wrong. I'd do the same were I to move out of the country.

However, before I went around telling people to learn English, I'd be very sure that my arguments on the internet stating this have zero grammatical mistakes. Just a thought.
