Reasons why you shouldn't pirate
At the beginning when we first started the current conflict project, decided to write about the 2008 presidental election for the USA. I decided not to do it as after a few days of research I was really bored. I then started researching about piracy, and I realized that it was a lot more interesting. At the end, I decided to choose piracy because so many people don't know about downloading music illegally and many people pirate software, thinking that it is only them so it doesn't matter. In the beginning, I assumed that downloading from Limewire or other illegal MP3 sites was legal, because why wouldn't the authorities stop them? I also knew that there were punishments for DVD piracy and CD piracy, but I did not know that they were that serious. I wanted to lean about where the pirates got the material, how the pirated the goods, why they are supported, what the law enforcement is doing about them, and what the manufacturers or entertainment companies are doing about them.. In this essay, you will find out how DVDs are pirated, how physical products are pirated, who pirating affects, what the punishments of piracy are, and how the nations are contributing to piracy.
In the beginning, I failed to find any information about piracy. Most of the information that I found were only telling me facts. That was because I was using Google, which I found out later that it is really inefficient. I also found many sites talking about pirates of the seas! Many products were even anti-virus products that companies were trying to sell me! After some teachings about keywords from Mr. Williams, I got better results, but not good enough. Mr. Williams then introduced us to the hidden internet. The hidden interent is a series of databases that the school subscribes to which gives you information from subscribed sites all into one database. Using the skills that Mr. Williams had taught us, in minutes I had found important sites that would guide me through my research.
After learning about the hidden internet, I got a lot of information. I think that the hidden interest is very important because you can see many articles that are printed so you will have more resources. I will surely use this resource again in the future as it saves a lot of time.
Piracy is a very large problem because many people are illegally buying/downloading DVDs, software, and physical products. People then buy the pirated products for a cheap price and that makes the companies lose money. They buy pirated products because they are as many as 100 times cheaper than the real product. This topic is serious and it is a very important current conflict because many people are involved and there the only people that can stop it are the people that are downloading or buying the products. If they stop buying or downloading illegal products the companies will make more money and they will be a lot more successful.
One of the ways that movies are pirated is by recording it in the cinema.
“It's a fast-changing world for Harris and Kissinger too, who must keep up with that technology to best be able to spot anyone filming within a theater. There was a time when creating a decent pirated-theater copy required a tripod, a camera the size of a suitcase and a host of editing equipment. All pirates need now is a small camera, a computer and a theater armrest”(George Undercover Cops).
Since it is really easy to pirate DVDs and record movies, the MPAA(Moving Picture Association of America) has hired agents to use night vision scopes to find people that are recording the movie. It works because when the pirates record something, usually the screen emits a faint light that only the night vision scopes can see in the movie theater can see. I can see this working with pirates that don't know about this stuff, but what if the pirate covers the screen and other emitting lights with tape? Also, couldn't the MPAA just reward people with maybe $1000 for each person they report? As you can see this is a never ending fight and pirates have even gone as far as pirating physical products.
Physical products are usually pirated by either cloning the entire factory or by taking pictures of a not yet released product and producing it.
“Cloners look for opportunity first, and manufacturers often give it to them, often in the form of a hot product that is released in a limited number of markets. Desire spreads worldwide, and the cloners are ready to fill any gaps that emerge in supply or distribution. (That's what's happening now with the iPhone, which for nearly a year will be sold in North America only.)”( Koeppel China's iClone)
