Last year, The Legacy, which I am a part of, put on a program about women in the media. We watched a video and then had a discussion on how women were being portrayed in the media and how that made us feel. I think that this program was a great way to get people here at HSU to learn more about the image of women in the media and to give everyone an opportunity to discuss the matter in a comfortable environment. I think that the program was successful because people were able to openly discuss their feelings and there was a lot of responses to the discussion questions.
I think that the Legacy, in general, has been very impactful to this community. This is only our second year running and already people know who we are and what we are all about. This club is a great resource for women of all colors to come together as sisters and bond with each other, support one another, and be active in the community. I know from experience that this club has helped me to grow more, not only as a woman of color, but as a woman in general. I was able to come out of my comfort zone and become more active in the community. When I first arrived at HSU, I was nervous because I was so far from home and I didn't know too many people, plus I am a naturally shy person which makes things much harder. Being a part of the Legacy helped me to come out of my shell and interact more with people. If I had not joined the Legacy, I probably would not have had the courage to become part of the councils that I am a part of, like Cypress Council or RPB, and I definately would not have had the courage to step into leadership roles like Vice President of Cypress Council or Secretary of RPB.
I know that I still have a lot of growing to do. I still get extremely nervous when speaking in public, but I am trying to remedie that by putting myself in more situations where I am able to speak in front of a lot of people. Maybe a program tha addresses how to feel confident when speaking in public would help people who are like me and have issues with public speaking. Public speaking aside, I still need to grow a little more as far as developing or planning curricular and community development programs. I have ideas of possible programs, but they seem a little childish for college students, atleast to me anyways. So, I think that I need to grow a little more as far as developing my ideas and actually putting the programs into motion.
