Self Discovery

Most times, we hear stories of highly successful people in the society. We admire such individuals and respect them for their achievements.

Most times, we hear stories of highly successful people in the society. We admire such individuals and respect them for their achievements. Some of us call them ‘geniuses’, ‘gurus’ or whatever. Some small-minded people even go to the extent of saying they use magical or supernatural powers. As big thinkers, we must realize the simple truth- that these people are humans like us. They have no special brain or organs. What gave them the edge over others is their ability to find their treasure and utilize it effectively.

However, a lot of people nowadays restrict themselves to their ‘box of limitation’. Such people never realize that they have their pots of gold beside them. They lose countless opportunities around them that would have made them successful. It is not because they don’t have eyes or don’t want something good for their lives. It is simply because they do not take the responsibility of searching for their potentials for effective utilization. Such folks haven’t discovered themselves yet.

Every individual is being created by God Almighty with special abilities. Such abilities vary in different individuals. They are hidden somewhere inside us. It is now a responsibility for every one of us to conduct a search through ourselves to locate them. No one will do it for you. You have to do it yourself. Sounds kind of scary? Not at, all. What I am talking about is how important it is for you to go through a simple process which is your first stepping stone to success. This process is what I call Self discovery.

Self discovery is a process in which an individual inquires more about himself. He discovers his capabilities and weak points. This is the foundation of creativity. Failure to discover yourself might hinder you from creating a realistic goal. It is a known fact that a human brain consists more than 14 billion cells. Every normal human being has the same kind of brain the ‘so-called’ ‘geniuses’ have. Let’s stop killing our potentials. Achievers don’t undergo brain transplant to succeed. The utilization of their brains is what makes them rise above others. Anyone could be an achiever if he/she wants to.

“A message prepared in the mind reaches a mind; a message prepared in life reaches a life”

Moreover, everything in this life is meant for a purpose. You have to know that you’re for a purpose. It’s your responsibility to find that purpose. It’s quite unfortunate that most people restrict their success in life to excuses. Some believe that being from a less privileged background or financially handicapped makes it impossible for them to reach the top. Excuse is a major road-block to achievement. It is your enemy and you have to fight against it. If I may ask; is there anyone who has never experienced a setback? Whatever your answer, you need to know that great men had huge setbacks. Instead of turning those setbacks into worry and excuses, they transformed them into challenges which helped them skyrocket their success to the top. Therefore, why not take responsibility of yourself. You own your vehicle of life. You need to take control and drive it to the right destination. Search your mind to discover your treasure. It is your start point to success. Below are seven (7) practical guides you could use during your self-discovery process;

  • Question yourself about your level of success and what you’ve accomplished
  • Answer with honesty and generosity
  • Proper self-analysis through self reflection and by interacting with others
  • Figuring out good answers by meeting people with good sense of judgment (like parents, mentors, advisors, teachers etc.)
  • Writing out what your advisor(s) told you.
  • Compare your answers to those of your advisor(s)
  • Make reasonable conclusion(s)

These steps are very productive. I’ve tried them and they helped a lot. However, getting results it is not automatic. It’s a gradual practical process that requires careful observation, honesty and consciousness.

In addition, I’ll like to point out fear and low self-esteem as deadly killers of success. People who see themselves as going nowhere or fear that they might fail end up at the bottom. I guess you won’t want that. So, you have to break the jinx of fear and prepare yourself for anything that comes your way. Don’t settle for defeat. You’re a victor, fight against all odds. Remember that if you recognize your potentials, keep them alive by using them appropriately, and choose the field that uses them, you’ll rise to the top. Wishing you the best.
