Smoking in Public Places

In this day and age, smoking becomes common things for the people. They always smoke without concern about the surroundings. Some people thought smoking can liberate their tension and can relax their mind. How about the nonsmoker?

Are they can release their tension too, or they will get the secondhand smoke? Actually, smoking can give lots of negative effects for the smoker and the secondhand smoker. Smoking can harm our bodies in many ways, but it is especially harmful to the lungs of a person with asthmas. Tobacco smoke is a powerful trigger of asthma symptoms. That is why I am extremely agreed that, smoking should be banned in the public places so that the nonsmoker will live in the pink of health. Below are reasons why smoking should be banned in public places.

Usually, smokings are allowed at the sideways, restaurant and also at the community centers. These places have many people including the children. Let says, there is a smoker at those places; automatically the people surroundings will be the secondhand smoker. Usually, people don't smoke because they understand the danger of smoking. But, what we worried about is the secondhand smoker. It is because the secondhand smoke may be the main factor in causing to a number of health problems. Mostly, the secondhand smoke will irritate our lungs and it also can reduce the oxygen in our blood.

Furthermore, the secondhand smoke can harm the cardiovascular system of nonsmokers in many ways. For one thing, it causes coronary heart disease, such as a heart attack. It also can damage blood vessels. The secondhand smokes also will effects for the other people especially the children. The effects are worst during the child's first five years, since the child may spend the size of that time with smoking parents. The secondhand smoke will disturb the child physical and cognitive development.

Then, how to protect the nonsmoker from get the secondhand smoke? Of course the banning smoking in public places is the best ideas, but it is not easy to execute. The government must do lots of things such as to determine what public places will be smoke-free. It is depends on recommendations of the people. However there are several ideas for the nonsmoker to avoid them from the secondhand smoke. Firstly, they must always take the `nonsmoking` option that is available. Today many restaurants have nonsmoking sections and the hotel offer nonsmoking rooms and floors. Furthermore, at the office, you can ask the smokers if they would not smoke around you. You also can use a fan and open the window to keep the air moving. But, the best way is not smoke. If the smoker concern about the other people health, they are not smoking at such places. The government also should make a campaign to avoid people from smoking. It is very important to expose about the danger of smoking for public.

In other hand, the government also must punish the person who cannot obey the rule. The smoker must pay a fine. Other than that, The Ministry of Health also must find the best way to stop this smoking habit. When all sectors get together, they can stop the smoking.

As a conclusion, the government must stop the import of cigarette or increase its price even the country get an income from that to make this country as a clean from smoker. Through this way, we can be an example to other countries.

The Evaluative Commentary

I had made a summary of the arguments about the banning smoking in public places. I had chosen this topic because in order to make the smoker become aware about the effects of smoking and the secondhand smoke. This topic also can make the nonsmoker know about their authority in public places. The nonsmokers must get the good and fresh air in the public places.

In order to consider my audience about the arguments, in the first piece, I have mentioned that about the effects for the smokers and the nonsmokers. In the second piece, I have mentioned about what places are allowed for smoking.

In the summary, I have used the technical vocabulary and long sentences because I think this sound more impressive and effective. In my first draft before, I didn't think that it sounded very persuasive so I had used some different ideas and extended on them. An example of this is the long sentence at the end of the last paragraph, when I explain that the nonsmoker must excellent to take an action in order to avoid them from the secondhand smoke. I think that my piece is very effective and will influence the nonsmoker to be brave to safe their life.

When the smoker read about this summary, they will feel guilty and want to stop from smoking at all. It is because, they will realize the danger of smoking and the effects for the nonsmoker.

i am a non-smoker and i agree totally with what you say but even the smoker has his rights to somke and so what are the places where he can smoke. i am working on a project so there must be a balance between the pros and cons of smoking. we must alvays remember that the world isn't all ours, even smokers have rights to there life like non-smokers so we must also cooperate with them to have a better life for the both of us.

thanks for your comment..i agree with you..smokers should know where there could smoke and where the couldn't smoke...but in public place there could effect the non-smoker and the people surrounding them..they should choose the better place than public places to smoke

I think this really boils down to the rights of the individual versus the rights of society. Does the individual get to have control over if they can smoke, or can we ban it for the good of society? Modern society seems to be leaning towards the rights of the individual; that is, we are allowing smokers to smoke. Also, would banning smoking really be a solution? In the US, underage drinking is obviously illegal. The meer fact that it is illegal is making the problem even worse. If the world compares drinking in the US to drinking in other countries, it will realize that the drinking problem in US is much more severe. So, will placing a ban on smoking reduce the problem or encourage it?

By the way, watch out for grammar errors in your article...
#11 by smoker anonymous, May 16, 2007
I think on the case of smoking, for the most part society rules, out of respect for the non-smoker it should at least be limited to ones own house, banning completely would be a little harsh, though it IS a bad habit to start. Smoking in public however is already banned in most of my city and it has helped our communities be cleaner. I personally am working on quitting smoking, so I support a PUBLIC ban on smoking but in ones own home, it should still be their choice

I agree with you everyway, your article will have good information for my debate on smokers on a different forum.

in their own home the could smoke if he/she live alone..But what about the other residents that life together with them..their own family, friends
#14 by Anonymous, May 16, 2007
A person, smoker or not, should have sense and respect enough not to expose friends and family to smokers

Very informative article, if only it weren't filled with generalised personal views and grammatical errors. Do you have any idea what it is about?
Please discuss.
#16 by some guy, May 17, 2007
I'm going to probably the the only person here against a ban on public smoking, but I would like to make a point. As both are bad habits, let's compare smoking to drinking as I did above. The age limit on alcohol has really caused a sort of insentive for underage drinkers, who have a slight thrill because they are breaking the law. Compare this scenario to European nations and tell me if limiting the age on alcohol has really been effective or not. Now, let's look at some history. During the prohibition in the 1920s, alcohol was completely banned. The result? Drinking became rampant among many people. It was smuggled in, people drank them at secret bars, and many kept and drank it at their homes. I am not by any means advocating smoking, but I am simply stating that banning smoking may not actually be the most effective path to a smoking-free world.

As well as non-smokers, smokers have a right to live how ever they please, its a special privaledge we get as Americans. The way i look at it is that smokers should be able to smoke freely, and non-smokers should be able to breath freely without the hastle of trying to get away from, or just dealing with the cigarette smoke. So instead of completely banning it,which is a bit harsh if i might say, smoking should be kept to distinct areas. That way if a non-smoker is bothered by the smoke, they can move away from the it. Thus everyone is satisfied and happy. If people could learn to just compromise with each other, then America, along with the rest of the world, would be in alot better shape. PeAcE&LoVe
#23 by shortydave, May 21, 2007
There needs to be restrictions on smoking but I dont think it should get out of hand. I'm allergic to cigarette smoke (and didnt find out until I was 12) and my entire family used to smoke. This has caused some asthma problems with me, but still, personally I have no problem with a smoking and a non-smoking section as long as they are completely walled off from eachother. This way, I can breathe clean air and smokers can smoke, making everyone happy. The only problem with this is the amount of money it takes for the construction of the wall and different ventilation systems. The government should pass a law making this construction necessary, but at the same time they should give some kind of assistance to build the needed upgrades so small buisnesses will be able to afford this.
#24 by Denan, May 26, 2007
I don't think that is the excellent idea.
#25 by Miguel, May 30, 2007
I think all forms of drug abuse (i.e. Drinking, smoking, shooting, etc.) should be made ILLEGAL. By saying it's okay to smoke, they're saying that it is okay to kill yourself. We may have an overpopulatoin problem but come on. As for my technical evaluation of the article, I would say to edit it and remove the grammatical errors. Over all, it was very good and informative. Thanks for posting. : )

Actually, more and more smokers already realize that they should quit smoking. However, they fail to quit.

Non-smokers should help them.

Here's how to do that.....

Maybe I'm the first to say this, maybe not: You can't just expect a person to STOP smoking. I'm a nonsmoker, but listen to me when I say that not everyone has the strength to stop smoking. Smoking is an ADDICTION and we all know that it takes an addict not only time, but you need to know that a good, strong, stable mind is needed as well. that is y very few people are unable to go 'cold turkey'. so, i have to say that, yes, it's unfair to have to deal with the smoker clogging up YOUR lungs, but do keep in mind that maybe they just can't help that addiction. just don't forget that it's an addiction. i do agree with some of ur viewpoints otherwise. and mind you, imnot saying that it is completely acceptable for a smoker to smoke in a crowded area of nonsmokers. im saying that it all boils down to everyone, smokers and nonsmokers, being mature and understanding of one another.
#33 by jewel, Jul 12, 2007
The united states is the land of the free and smokers have the same rights as non smokers and no one should judge anyone for the way they live their lives. Prostitution, drugs and alcohol and many more things are illegal but people do illegal things everyday but your not hounding them. Why don't people just walk the other way if someone is smoking they have the right to do what they want with their lives. They aren't pushing a cigarette into your mouth and making you puff!!
#34 by Dave, Jul 23, 2007
Right on jewel! I'm sick of these whiners everywhere who want the whole world to cater to them. These wimps would never have made it in the 70s and 80s, when I remember you could smoke just about everywhere, especially malls.

If store owners thought that their business would do better being completely smoke-free, then they can do that of their own volition. Why do we need laws to force these owners to kick the smokers out? If there were such a demand for smoke-free places, then market forces would force businesses that allowed smoking out of business. Of course, us smokers (there are a LOT of us) WANT to be able to smoke inside and not be banished from enjoying the food, music, etc. inside. That is why market forces have not forced smoke-friendly places out of business. No one is forcing the smoke-free pansies to patronize all establishments. If people are too full of themselves to demand that others cater to them as opposed to just leaving and finding another place that does cater to them, or at least go to the friggin' non-smoking section, then they are nothing but bigots.

MARKET FORCES determine rules regarding smoking. We don't need the govt to push us smokers out just because a bunch of wussies can't handle the real world.

As some guy posted earlier about the prohibiton acts on banning alcohol in the mid 1900's led to an increase in crime. This is when mobs started and gangs came around because the smuggling of the alcohol. The underground networks and the organization of crime grew and grew. Who knows what would happen if smoking was banned throughtout the U.S. Im not saying im a pro-smoker but it can not be banned from the U.S. Its just a ludacris idea.
#36 by student, Aug 23, 2007
I am a smoker. I agree with the fact that some smokers are not concerned when it comes to smoking around children or non-smokers. But if you want for cleaner air not only are you going to have to ban smoking your going to have to ban cars. You think that will go over? Smoking is an addiction, I have tried for 5 years to quit but I can never get the will power to do it. Any other smoker out there will tell you it becomes your way of life. In conclusion, you make a good point but banning smoking all together would never happen, not only do so many people do it but the government makes way to much money off of it.
#37 by shashi, Aug 26, 2007
ya i too agree that smoking shud b banned wat i feel is abt the innocent youngsters who r very much influenced by seeing the smokers lik even they feel dat we shud try it once n they do the same as a result becom used to it n put others as wel as their parents who make such a big dream towards their children.

I've always wondered the point of smoking in the first place. Aside from a sense of "coolness" (which is shallow, to say the least) there seems to be nothing but negatives to the act.

Should smoking be banned? I say no. I think that a ban on smoking will take away one's personal rights, and many of you seem to feel that the majority rules. However if we ban smoking today many people will rejoice, they got what they wanted. This may lead to other things being banned though. Right now for instance there is a movement in the US to regulate what you can wear in public, what you can say in public, and what you can do in public. Many of you will probably feel that smoking is completely seperate due to the fact that it has been touted as having harmful effects both to the smoker and those in the general vicinity. This may be true, however I know of only one medical report to claim second hand smoke has harmful effects and a US district court said that it came to the predetermind conclusion of those results and that the evidence didn't support the claim. The issue of smoking should not be determined by one's preference of the issue. The pros and cons should be carefully examined before such a desicion is made for society as a whole. I feel to do other wise will bring about simillar situations that were seen during prohibition when alchohol was banned because people didn't like it. We must also consider the smokers when we think about banning smoking. Many of you have stated that laws lean more twords the rights of the smoker, I do not see that where I live. My state passed what is called a clean air act which prohibits a smoker from smoking inside a public building or with in 15 feet of a public entrance. They have also just passed a law stating that smoking in public places altogether is banned. I feel that a business owner should have the right to descide for themselves if smoking should be allowed in their establishment say for instance a bar. If the bar owner wants people not to smoke in their bar then that is their right to say so. We shouldn't force the establishment to conform to what we want. If we do so then we have infringed on their right to sell to those that they chose. Now staying on the bars if the smoker has to go all the way home from the bar to smoke we'll also be increasing the likelyhood that someone will drive while intoxicated which is worse than smokeing in my opinion. If an establishment allows smoking and you dislike it then go to some place that doesn't allow it and if the buisness loses enough buisness due to the smoking issue then odds are they will change their policy. This would be much better than forcing them to do so. To force the issue will create civil unrest because no one likes to have the ideals of others forced upon them. I will not force you to think and act the way I think you should so no one should force me to conform to their ideals aswell. We should tolerate one another and not try to force our wills on those that do things we dislike. If we allow one personal freedom to disappear today then tomorrow we may lose them all.

i think that smoking is a really bad thing. and that people that do it are just really low in self esteem or that people just get pressured into it. i think that we need to abandion smoking from the states for good. we may not ntice it but this thing is killing so many americans and we cant even tell. we're loosing loved ones and friends that we shouldn't be loosing. so i personally think that we should abandion this for good!! this would help many people. and the ones that are addictted will not like this fer a while but after a while they will soon be thankful that we did this for them and notice that we do care! we want to help them not torcher them like they think we would be doing!! =]

I absolutely agree with a ban in public places! Yes it is an addiction, however there is no need to expose the non-smokers whom choose to not inhale the harmful toxins cigarette smoking leaves lingering in the air. You can\'t tell me that a smoker can\'t wait a lousy hour to hour in a half of dining out not to smoke Give a break! Do it at home or in your car. Don\'t expose non-smokers to health issues that we are choosing to prevent in the first place.
#104 by kecb, Nov 26, 2007
I am not saying that smokers should quit smoking, this is America land of the free. All I am saying is keep it to themselves don't expose us non-smokers. The smoking ban wants to do is protect our health.

This is to some guy may 17, 2007:
Your comparison to drinking and smoking doesn\'t really make sense OR apply to this situation. Drinking alcahol doesn\'t hurt OTHER PEOPLE!!! smoking does. Inhaling the second hand smoke harms other people\'s health. Also, I find smoking rude and repulsive.

I completely agree with the author of this article. Smoking doesn\'t make any sense. Honestly, If you need a place to find comfort or relaxation, HECK! take a bath! eat some chocolate! Get exercise! do SOMETHING that doesn\'t put toxic materials into your body.

Banning smoking is a pretty drastic idea, but if it would work, it would be amazing.
#109 by RB, Nov 29, 2007
Smoking itself should be banned. It stinks all the way around. People who smoke stink. From their breath to their clothes, they just smell bad. And their teeth and tongue are rotten. It gets in their clothes and their hair. Not to mention their voice....Smoking over a period of time cause the voice to dry up and sound like a dying crypt keeper. Smokers effect everyone around them. If they want to die, stay home and smoke and kill yourself that way. Don\'t force the entire world to die just because you want to die. Smokers have a choice to smoke or not to smoke. Non smokers have no choice but to endure the smoke.
#110 by RB, Nov 29, 2007
Who is the person that said "Drinking alcahol doesn't hurt OTHER PEOPLE!!!" Where are you from? Read the paper and see how many people die from drunk drivers each and every month. Drinking alchol does hurt other people. It does more than hurt them........It kills them.
#111 by T, Nov 29, 2007
Why is it that people are trying so hard to ban smoking in public? Why isn't anyone trying to ban drinking in public places? Ok so you don't want people to smoke around you but you don't have a problem with somone drinking and maybe getting in a car and killing you? People are actually trying to ban smoking in bars!!! That's like saying its ok to drink and destroy your liver or get drunk and get in a car, but it's not ok to smoke. If the people in bars where worried about their health then I don't think they'd be in a bar in the first place!!!!
#112 by CC, Dec 3, 2007
I smoke, but I agree with the ban of smoking in public places. I can't wait to see what they blame next for the health problems that are currently blamed on smoking. I figure this will get them about 20 more years of not having to do anything about the toxins spewed into the air by politicians' big business buddies or about the fact that the American medical money machine uses the government to threaten doctors who tell people what's really wrong with them. I used to have health problems. One of the benefits of having a foreign doctor was learning that I was dehydrated. I re-hydrated and have been drinking water and eating unprocessed sea salt ever since, and despite the fact that I still smoke, I'm fine. Even so, I agree 100%, smoking stinks.
#113 by CC, Dec 3, 2007
I should probably explain: Why do I smoke if it stinks? I smoke to keep from screaming. Ozone takes care of the smoking stink but nothing seems to help with the putrid smell of ignorance and self-righteousness.

#118 by active man, Dec 5, 2007
i cant believe how disgusting it is in thie first place and y someone would like to inhale so many drugs into the body! first it has tar which can stop your lungs from functioning and your heart. your heart controls your blood flow and makes the body keep moving. and second hand smoking is even worse. I wonder if the people who buy their cigarrettes even consider how others will feel while they smoke? i guessing not at all. thats why smoking can be stopped in little by little ways such as taking it out of public eateries. with taking a stand against this, dont go in at it alone. have others help u along the way.

As much as I agree that smoking is a horriable habit and does lead to many deaths, we do live in America. We have the right to smoke. Like the article stated, there are ways around getting second hand smoke. I am not saying I agree to smoking in public places, but just like SomeGuy said, banning it completely wouldn't solve the problem. Kids under 21 still drink, get their stomache pumped, and few die due to drinking. Just becuase they are underage doesn't mean they wont do it, and just because smoking is banned doesn't mean people will stop doing it. It will always be a problem in the world, and banning it completely wont just stop it.
#124 by sum1 random, Dec 14, 2007

U suck smoking should be permitted everywhere.
#132 by meagan, Dec 20, 2007
Im both a smoker and under the age of eighteen. I am a recovering drug addict and alcoholic, and smoking helps me get through the day. Im doing a paper for school about why people should be allowed to smoke in public places, and after reading this artical, I dont think it should be. Its not like Im all moved and inspired and now Im gonna quit smoking. Ill be the first to admit that I love cigarettes and they got me by the balls, but this opened my eyes to the views of a non-smoker. I attend a continuation high school with about 500 kids. We are allowed to smoke after we have stepped off our campus. About 80 percent of Bowman students smoke. Today I noticed the non-smokers have to segregate themselves from everyone else to get away from the cigarette smoke. I feel that there should be designated smoking areas in every community only becuase people like me dont own a car and dont want to walk 5 miles to be able to light a ciggarette up. Kinda like Magic Mountain and Disneyland have.

I also think that everyone who said that cigarettes should be completely banned, are morons! I dont think half you people know what that would do to our economy. Imagine how many citizens, single moms would lose their job working at cigarette factories. The unemployment rate would sky rocket all because, you had to have it your way. You have a voice just as much as we do. Let us smoke and we'll let you breath your damn air.

Not to mention its already been infested by your car that still hasnt passed a smog check.... thanks.
#133 by sum1 random, Dec 20, 2007
fernado cameron aiala, well, smoking shouldn't b permited everywhere, just sum places. cause smoking in certain places may make something bad happen. IM JUST SAYING. ^^

ok all of u ppl who think smoking is horrible, well think if u people wern\'t aloud to use your cellphones except for in designated areas... Yea that would suck, well that is exactly how the smokers feel. yea im 15 and im doing a project about this. So any1 here who disagrees is just wrong, because if u think about it, you can move yourself out of the legal aged smokers breathing space. so stop being so lazy and just take a few steps to the side. Dang America is getting lazy.......
#165 by annoyed! , Jan 17, 2008
these peeps who write these comments are immature and stupid for writing junk on here so get a life and think about someone else for a change. smoking is a joke. its a nasty habit just like picking your nose. So wake up and smell the coffee. smoking kills the smoker and the non smoker breathing it. they are committing suicide and murder all at the same time. so why should i let a smoker slowly kill me? how stupid is that? smoking is a problem - its about time we do something about it. so stop using this comments thing as a chat room, how lame can you be?

Your essay had a lot of errors, but was easy to understand, and you made a great point. i am not a smoker but i think that people should have the right to choose if they want to smoke or not. but for the non-smokers i understand you dont want to be eating and have to sit there and smell cigarette smoke. but for the non-smokers who work at a bar and are tired of coming home smelling like a ashtray then dont go to the bar. even if that is your partime job. get another one. yes smoking should be banned from public places but not in bars. at least let the smokers have a place to go and enjoy their time and be able to smoke.

#179 by Kierra Hughes, Jan 29, 2008
writing to thebest person ever! who wrote on Jan 16, 2008.

okay, this article is on smoking, not cell phones. cell phones are annoying, not dangerous. smoking is the 2nd leading cause of death. my whole step side of my family smokes and they are in horrible condition. my little brother isnt even aloud to be around my grandfather becuase he has asthma from my step dad growing up around my grandfather smoking. not only does he smoke, but he has diabetes. and with him paying the prices for ciggarettes, he cant afford to buy his medication. so if smoking was cut out of public life, he wouldnt go through as many ciggarettes a day, leading up to him saving money so he can buy his medicene. also, smoking in restaurants is rude. the smoke can change the taste of your food. and being enclosed in a small space can add to the dangers of second hand smoke. smoking may be unhealthy to those who choose to do it, however, they have filters on the end of the ciggarettes. the pple around them do not. meaning the chemicals are not filtered out before they are added into the air we breath which goes into our lungs and decays them. so, next time you choose to say that
America is getting lazy, think about it more. because a person can be five yards away from the deadly chemicals and still inhale it. plus, smoking and talking on a cell phone in someone\'s home or even in a restaurant relate. because both are asked to go outside.

ya, im 13 and doing a school project. so next time you choose to insult those who are smart about their health and choose not to smoke, look into it more. because all in all, you\'re the lazy one.

buh-bye.

ok, smoking is plain stupid. duh, whoever invented it, must have been playing a practical joke. they must have been,
he he he, "Uh...smoke this!" he he he.
"ok, but whats in it?"
"I dont know....but its got a....smooth taste!?" he he he.

see what i mean? so get real...smoking is a joke....and its just plain nasty...and its stupid....so get a life, for all you smokers out there. the problem with our society is that we've just accepted it, like its perfectly normal, but since when is sucking in chemicals day in and day out perfectly normal?

smokers....get a clue!
#182 by Linnay, Jan 31, 2008
love the lord your God with all your heart, with all soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.
God doesn't want us harming our bodies, bodies he made perfect in the image of him, smoking is just one of the ways our society has conformed into harming our bodies. So dont destroy the temple God has made for you, but take care of it and doing this will glorify him.
#183 by mr2 owner, Jan 31, 2008
ok to #165. wow ur 15 right ok so what ur saying is i should haft to move every time i dont want to be around ciggarette smoke. how is that right, and by the way you cant compare smoking to cell phones. using a cell phone isn\'t going to hurt you, but if u smoke around me im going to inhale second hand smoke which causes lung cancer and emphysema. im not sure what amendment it is but it states that your rights end where my rights begin. so you might have the right to smoke where ever you want to but not when it hurts my health. plus being only 15 why are you smoking anyway?? I know its your choice but have u looked at all of the statistics, all your doing is killing yourself for nothing. To top it off smoking is so expensive, that money could be going to something useful for yourself. Its not about being lazy, your invading my rights end of story.

I dont think smoking should be banned in public places, smokers have rights too,if smoking is gonna be banned in public places than cigarettes shouldnt be sold any more, and thats not gonna happen its a free world and i say smoke where you want if someone doesnt like it than i guess they will either have to move away from you or deal with it, one of the two choices will work

It is sad enough to me that as educated as we are on the effects of smoke that people even still do that to themselves, but it infuriates me that they subject other people to their own dirty habit. Do what you want to yourself, whatever that is your problem if you want to kill yourself, but since when is killing other people acceptable?? It is not. And for the people who are saying that people who DONT smoke should just not be around those who do....you all are idiots. It is not fair to say the people who aren't doing anything to intefere with others should go out of OUR way to help YOU- you have the habit YOU deal with it! People DIE from secondhand smoke- people who do not even smoke DIE, including children! If you really think that this is okay to do just cause you're addicted to it, then you need to get help because your addiction is not worth anyone else's life. It's time to make a change, we are too smart for this shit.
#198 by JenJen, Feb 28, 2008
