Smoking in Public Places

In this day and age, smoking becomes common things for the people. They always smoke without concern about the surroundings. Some people thought smoking can liberate their tension and can relax their mind. How about the nonsmoker?

Are they can release their tension too, or they will get the secondhand smoke? Actually, smoking can give lots of negative effects for the smoker and the secondhand smoker. Smoking can harm our bodies in many ways, but it is especially harmful to the lungs of a person with asthmas. Tobacco smoke is a powerful trigger of asthma symptoms. That is why I am extremely agreed that, smoking should be banned in the public places so that the nonsmoker will live in the pink of health. Below are reasons why smoking should be banned in public places.

Usually, smokings are allowed at the sideways, restaurant and also at the community centers. These places have many people including the children. Let says, there is a smoker at those places; automatically the people surroundings will be the secondhand smoker. Usually, people don't smoke because they understand the danger of smoking. But, what we worried about is the secondhand smoker. It is because the secondhand smoke may be the main factor in causing to a number of health problems. Mostly, the secondhand smoke will irritate our lungs and it also can reduce the oxygen in our blood.

Furthermore, the secondhand smoke can harm the cardiovascular system of nonsmokers in many ways. For one thing, it causes coronary heart disease, such as a heart attack. It also can damage blood vessels. The secondhand smokes also will effects for the other people especially the children. The effects are worst during the child's first five years, since the child may spend the size of that time with smoking parents. The secondhand smoke will disturb the child physical and cognitive development.

Then, how to protect the nonsmoker from get the secondhand smoke? Of course the banning smoking in public places is the best ideas, but it is not easy to execute. The government must do lots of things such as to determine what public places will be smoke-free. It is depends on recommendations of the people. However there are several ideas for the nonsmoker to avoid them from the secondhand smoke. Firstly, they must always take the `nonsmoking` option that is available. Today many restaurants have nonsmoking sections and the hotel offer nonsmoking rooms and floors. Furthermore, at the office, you can ask the smokers if they would not smoke around you. You also can use a fan and open the window to keep the air moving. But, the best way is not smoke. If the smoker concern about the other people health, they are not smoking at such places. The government also should make a campaign to avoid people from smoking. It is very important to expose about the danger of smoking for public.

In other hand, the government also must punish the person who cannot obey the rule. The smoker must pay a fine. Other than that, The Ministry of Health also must find the best way to stop this smoking habit. When all sectors get together, they can stop the smoking.

As a conclusion, the government must stop the import of cigarette or increase its price even the country get an income from that to make this country as a clean from smoker. Through this way, we can be an example to other countries.

The Evaluative Commentary

I had made a summary of the arguments about the banning smoking in public places. I had chosen this topic because in order to make the smoker become aware about the effects of smoking and the secondhand smoke. This topic also can make the nonsmoker know about their authority in public places. The nonsmokers must get the good and fresh air in the public places.

In order to consider my audience about the arguments, in the first piece, I have mentioned that about the effects for the smokers and the nonsmokers. In the second piece, I have mentioned about what places are allowed for smoking.

In the summary, I have used the technical vocabulary and long sentences because I think this sound more impressive and effective. In my first draft before, I didn't think that it sounded very persuasive so I had used some different ideas and extended on them. An example of this is the long sentence at the end of the last paragraph, when I explain that the nonsmoker must excellent to take an action in order to avoid them from the secondhand smoke. I think that my piece is very effective and will influence the nonsmoker to be brave to safe their life.

When the smoker read about this summary, they will feel guilty and want to stop from smoking at all. It is because, they will realize the danger of smoking and the effects for the nonsmoker.

i am a non-smoker and i agree totally with what you say but even the smoker has his rights to somke and so what are the places where he can smoke. i am working on a project so there must be a balance between the pros and cons of smoking. we must alvays remember that the world isn't all ours, even smokers have rights to there life like non-smokers so we must also cooperate with them to have a better life for the both of us.
#5 by nayie4hope, May 7, 2007
thanks for your comment..i agree with you..smokers should know where there could smoke and where the couldn't smoke...but in public place there could effect the non-smoker and the people surrounding them..they should choose the better place than public places to smoke

I think this really boils down to the rights of the individual versus the rights of society. Does the individual get to have control over if they can smoke, or can we ban it for the good of society? Modern society seems to be leaning towards the rights of the individual; that is, we are allowing smokers to smoke. Also, would banning smoking really be a solution? In the US, underage drinking is obviously illegal. The meer fact that it is illegal is making the problem even worse. If the world compares drinking in the US to drinking in other countries, it will realize that the drinking problem in US is much more severe. So, will placing a ban on smoking reduce the problem or encourage it?

By the way, watch out for grammar errors in your article...
#11 by smoker anonymous, May 16, 2007
I think on the case of smoking, for the most part society rules, out of respect for the non-smoker it should at least be limited to ones own house, banning completely would be a little harsh, though it IS a bad habit to start. Smoking in public however is already banned in most of my city and it has helped our communities be cleaner. I personally am working on quitting smoking, so I support a PUBLIC ban on smoking but in ones own home, it should still be their choice
#12 by The Jason, May 16, 2007
I agree with you everyway, your article will have good information for my debate on smokers on a different forum.
#13 by az1, May 16, 2007
in their own home the could smoke if he/she live alone..But what about the other residents that life together with them..their own family, friends
#14 by Anonymous, May 16, 2007
A person, smoker or not, should have sense and respect enough not to expose friends and family to smokers

Very informative article, if only it weren't filled with generalised personal views and grammatical errors. Do you have any idea what it is about?
Please discuss.
#16 by some guy, May 17, 2007
I'm going to probably the the only person here against a ban on public smoking, but I would like to make a point. As both are bad habits, let's compare smoking to drinking as I did above. The age limit on alcohol has really caused a sort of insentive for underage drinkers, who have a slight thrill because they are breaking the law. Compare this scenario to European nations and tell me if limiting the age on alcohol has really been effective or not. Now, let's look at some history. During the prohibition in the 1920s, alcohol was completely banned. The result? Drinking became rampant among many people. It was smuggled in, people drank them at secret bars, and many kept and drank it at their homes. I am not by any means advocating smoking, but I am simply stating that banning smoking may not actually be the most effective path to a smoking-free world.

Smoking in front of non-smoker should be stopped!!!
#20 by armin, May 19, 2007
i fully agree with that. smoking should be banned
#21 by random smoker, May 21, 2007
As well as non-smokers, smokers have a right to live how ever they please, its a special privaledge we get as Americans. The way i look at it is that smokers should be able to smoke freely, and non-smokers should be able to breath freely without the hastle of trying to get away from, or just dealing with the cigarette smoke. So instead of completely banning it,which is a bit harsh if i might say, smoking should be kept to distinct areas. That way if a non-smoker is bothered by the smoke, they can move away from the it. Thus everyone is satisfied and happy. If people could learn to just compromise with each other, then America, along with the rest of the world, would be in alot better shape. PeAcE&LoVe
#22 by shortydave, May 21, 2007
There needs to be restrictions on smoking but I dont think it should get out of hand. I'm allergic to cigarette smoke (and didnt find out until I was 12) and my entire family used to smoke. This has caused some asthma problems with me, but still, personally I have no problem with a smoking and a non-smoking section as long as they are completely walled off from eachother. This way, I can breathe clean air and smokers can smoke, making everyone happy. The only problem with this is the amount of money it takes for the construction of the wall and different ventilation systems. The government should pass a law making this construction necessary, but at the same time they should give some kind of assistance to build the needed upgrades so small buisnesses will be able to afford this.
#23 by Denan, May 26, 2007
I don't think that is the excellent idea.
#24 by Miguel, May 30, 2007
I think all forms of drug abuse (i.e. Drinking, smoking, shooting, etc.) should be made ILLEGAL. By saying it's okay to smoke, they're saying that it is okay to kill yourself. We may have an overpopulatoin problem but come on. As for my technical evaluation of the article, I would say to edit it and remove the grammatical errors. Over all, it was very good and informative. Thanks for posting. : )

Actually, more and more smokers already realize that they should quit smoking. However, they fail to quit.

Non-smokers should help them.

Here's how to do that.....

Maybe I'm the first to say this, maybe not: You can't just expect a person to STOP smoking. I'm a nonsmoker, but listen to me when I say that not everyone has the strength to stop smoking. Smoking is an ADDICTION and we all know that it takes an addict not only time, but you need to know that a good, strong, stable mind is needed as well. that is y very few people are unable to go 'cold turkey'. so, i have to say that, yes, it's unfair to have to deal with the smoker clogging up YOUR lungs, but do keep in mind that maybe they just can't help that addiction. just don't forget that it's an addiction. i do agree with some of ur viewpoints otherwise. and mind you, imnot saying that it is completely acceptable for a smoker to smoke in a crowded area of nonsmokers. im saying that it all boils down to everyone, smokers and nonsmokers, being mature and understanding of one another.
#32 by jewel, Jul 12, 2007
The united states is the land of the free and smokers have the same rights as non smokers and no one should judge anyone for the way they live their lives. Prostitution, drugs and alcohol and many more things are illegal but people do illegal things everyday but your not hounding them. Why don't people just walk the other way if someone is smoking they have the right to do what they want with their lives. They aren't pushing a cigarette into your mouth and making you puff!!
#33 by Dave, Jul 23, 2007
Right on jewel! I'm sick of these whiners everywhere who want the whole world to cater to them. These wimps would never have made it in the 70s and 80s, when I remember you could smoke just about everywhere, especially malls.

If store owners thought that their business would do better being completely smoke-free, then they can do that of their own volition. Why do we need laws to force these owners to kick the smokers out? If there were such a demand for smoke-free places, then market forces would force businesses that allowed smoking out of business. Of course, us smokers (there are a LOT of us) WANT to be able to smoke inside and not be banished from enjoying the food, music, etc. inside. That is why market forces have not forced smoke-friendly places out of business. No one is forcing the smoke-free pansies to patronize all establishments. If people are too full of themselves to demand that others cater to them as opposed to just leaving and finding another place that does cater to them, or at least go to the friggin' non-smoking section, then they are nothing but bigots.

MARKET FORCES determine rules regarding smoking. We don't need the govt to push us smokers out just because a bunch of wussies can't handle the real world.

As some guy posted earlier about the prohibiton acts on banning alcohol in the mid 1900's led to an increase in crime. This is when mobs started and gangs came around because the smuggling of the alcohol. The underground networks and the organization of crime grew and grew. Who knows what would happen if smoking was banned throughtout the U.S. Im not saying im a pro-smoker but it can not be banned from the U.S. Its just a ludacris idea.
#35 by student, Aug 23, 2007
I am a smoker. I agree with the fact that some smokers are not concerned when it comes to smoking around children or non-smokers. But if you want for cleaner air not only are you going to have to ban smoking your going to have to ban cars. You think that will go over? Smoking is an addiction, I have tried for 5 years to quit but I can never get the will power to do it. Any other smoker out there will tell you it becomes your way of life. In conclusion, you make a good point but banning smoking all together would never happen, not only do so many people do it but the government makes way to much money off of it.
#36 by shashi, Aug 26, 2007
ya i too agree that smoking shud b banned wat i feel is abt the innocent youngsters who r very much influenced by seeing the smokers lik even they feel dat we shud try it once n they do the same as a result becom used to it n put others as wel as their parents who make such a big dream towards their children.

I've always wondered the point of smoking in the first place. Aside from a sense of "coolness" (which is shallow, to say the least) there seems to be nothing but negatives to the act.

Should smoking be banned? I say no. I think that a ban on smoking will take away one's personal rights, and many of you seem to feel that the majority rules. However if we ban smoking today many people will rejoice, they got what they wanted. This may lead to other things being banned though. Right now for instance there is a movement in the US to regulate what you can wear in public, what you can say in public, and what you can do in public. Many of you will probably feel that smoking is completely seperate due to the fact that it has been touted as having harmful effects both to the smoker and those in the general vicinity. This may be true, however I know of only one medical report to claim second hand smoke has harmful effects and a US district court said that it came to the predetermind conclusion of those results and that the evidence didn't support the claim. The issue of smoking should not be determined by one's preference of the issue. The pros and cons should be carefully examined before such a desicion is made for society as a whole. I feel to do other wise will bring about simillar situations that were seen during prohibition when alchohol was banned because people didn't like it. We must also consider the smokers when we think about banning smoking. Many of you have stated that laws lean more twords the rights of the smoker, I do not see that where I live. My state passed what is called a clean air act which prohibits a smoker from smoking inside a public building or with in 15 feet of a public entrance. They have also just passed a law stating that smoking in public places altogether is banned. I feel that a business owner should have the right to descide for themselves if smoking should be allowed in their establishment say for instance a bar. If the bar owner wants people not to smoke in their bar then that is their right to say so. We shouldn't force the establishment to conform to what we want. If we do so then we have infringed on their right to sell to those that they chose. Now staying on the bars if the smoker has to go all the way home from the bar to smoke we'll also be increasing the likelyhood that someone will drive while intoxicated which is worse than smokeing in my opinion. If an establishment allows smoking and you dislike it then go to some place that doesn't allow it and if the buisness loses enough buisness due to the smoking issue then odds are they will change their policy. This would be much better than forcing them to do so. To force the issue will create civil unrest because no one likes to have the ideals of others forced upon them. I will not force you to think and act the way I think you should so no one should force me to conform to their ideals aswell. We should tolerate one another and not try to force our wills on those that do things we dislike. If we allow one personal freedom to disappear today then tomorrow we may lose them all.

i think that smoking is a really bad thing. and that people that do it are just really low in self esteem or that people just get pressured into it. i think that we need to abandion smoking from the states for good. we may not ntice it but this thing is killing so many americans and we cant even tell. we're loosing loved ones and friends that we shouldn't be loosing. so i personally think that we should abandion this for good!! this would help many people. and the ones that are addictted will not like this fer a while but after a while they will soon be thankful that we did this for them and notice that we do care! we want to help them not torcher them like they think we would be doing!! =]

But still, it shouldnt be allowed. It just gives you severe health problems. So, Stop Smoking!
#100 by kecb, Nov 26, 2007
I absolutely agree with a ban in public places! Yes it is an addiction, however there is no need to expose the non-smokers whom choose to not inhale the harmful toxins cigarette smoking leaves lingering in the air. You can\'t tell me that a smoker can\'t wait a lousy hour to hour in a half of dining out not to smoke Give a break! Do it at home or in your car. Don\'t expose non-smokers to health issues that we are choosing to prevent in the first place.
#101 by kecb, Nov 26, 2007
I am not saying that smokers should quit smoking, this is America land of the free. All I am saying is keep it to themselves don't expose us non-smokers. The smoking ban wants to do is protect our health.

This is to some guy may 17, 2007:
Your comparison to drinking and smoking doesn\'t really make sense OR apply to this situation. Drinking alcahol doesn\'t hurt OTHER PEOPLE!!! smoking does. Inhaling the second hand smoke harms other people\'s health. Also, I find smoking rude and repulsive.

I completely agree with the author of this article. Smoking doesn\'t make any sense. Honestly, If you need a place to find comfort or relaxation, HECK! take a bath! eat some chocolate! Get exercise! do SOMETHING that doesn\'t put toxic materials into your body.

Banning smoking is a pretty drastic idea, but if it would work, it would be amazing.
#106 by RB, Nov 29, 2007
Smoking itself should be banned. It stinks all the way around. People who smoke stink. From their breath to their clothes, they just smell bad. And their teeth and tongue are rotten. It gets in their clothes and their hair. Not to mention their voice....Smoking over a period of time cause the voice to dry up and sound like a dying crypt keeper. Smokers effect everyone around them. If they want to die, stay home and smoke and kill yourself that way. Don\'t force the entire world to die just because you want to die. Smokers have a choice to smoke or not to smoke. Non smokers have no choice but to endure the smoke.
#107 by RB, Nov 29, 2007
Who is the person that said "Drinking alcahol doesn't hurt OTHER PEOPLE!!!" Where are you from? Read the paper and see how many people die from drunk drivers each and every month. Drinking alchol does hurt other people. It does more than hurt them........It kills them.
#108 by T, Nov 29, 2007
Why is it that people are trying so hard to ban smoking in public? Why isn't anyone trying to ban drinking in public places? Ok so you don't want people to smoke around you but you don't have a problem with somone drinking and maybe getting in a car and killing you? People are actually trying to ban smoking in bars!!! That's like saying its ok to drink and destroy your liver or get drunk and get in a car, but it's not ok to smoke. If the people in bars where worried about their health then I don't think they'd be in a bar in the first place!!!!
#109 by CC, Dec 3, 2007
I smoke, but I agree with the ban of smoking in public places. I can't wait to see what they blame next for the health problems that are currently blamed on smoking. I figure this will get them about 20 more years of not having to do anything about the toxins spewed into the air by politicians' big business buddies or about the fact that the American medical money machine uses the government to threaten doctors who tell people what's really wrong with them. I used to have health problems. One of the benefits of having a foreign doctor was learning that I was dehydrated. I re-hydrated and have been drinking water and eating unprocessed sea salt ever since, and despite the fact that I still smoke, I'm fine. Even so, I agree 100%, smoking stinks.
#110 by CC, Dec 3, 2007
I should probably explain: Why do I smoke if it stinks? I smoke to keep from screaming. Ozone takes care of the smoking stink but nothing seems to help with the putrid smell of ignorance and self-righteousness.
#111 by dude, Dec 3, 2007

#115 by active man, Dec 5, 2007
i cant believe how disgusting it is in thie first place and y someone would like to inhale so many drugs into the body! first it has tar which can stop your lungs from functioning and your heart. your heart controls your blood flow and makes the body keep moving. and second hand smoking is even worse. I wonder if the people who buy their cigarrettes even consider how others will feel while they smoke? i guessing not at all. thats why smoking can be stopped in little by little ways such as taking it out of public eateries. with taking a stand against this, dont go in at it alone. have others help u along the way.

As much as I agree that smoking is a horriable habit and does lead to many deaths, we do live in America. We have the right to smoke. Like the article stated, there are ways around getting second hand smoke. I am not saying I agree to smoking in public places, but just like SomeGuy said, banning it completely wouldn't solve the problem. Kids under 21 still drink, get their stomache pumped, and few die due to drinking. Just becuase they are underage doesn't mean they wont do it, and just because smoking is banned doesn't mean people will stop doing it. It will always be a problem in the world, and banning it completely wont just stop it.
#121 by sum1 random, Dec 14, 2007

Yea that would suck, well that is exactly how the smokers feel. yea im 15 and im doing a project about this. So any1 here who disagrees is just wrong, because if u think about it, you can move yourself out of the legal aged smokers breathing space. so stop being so lazy and just take a few steps to the side. Dang America is getting lazy.......
#159 by annoyed! , Jan 17, 2008
these peeps who write these comments are immature and stupid for writing junk on here so get a life and think about someone else for a change. smoking is a joke. its a nasty habit just like picking your nose. So wake up and smell the coffee. smoking kills the smoker and the non smoker breathing it. they are committing suicide and murder all at the same time. so why should i let a smoker slowly kill me? how stupid is that? smoking is a problem - its about time we do something about it. so stop using this comments thing as a chat room, how lame can you be?
#160 by someone, Jan 21, 2008

i am not a smoker but i think that people should have the right to choose if they want to smoke or not. but for the non-smokers i understand you dont want to be eating and have to sit there and smell cigarette smoke. but for the non-smokers who work at a bar and are tired of coming home smelling like a ashtray then dont go to the bar. even if that is your partime job. get another one. yes smoking should be banned from public places but not in bars. at least let the smokers have a place to go and enjoy their time and be able to smoke.

#172 by Kierra Hughes, Jan 29, 2008
writing to thebest person ever! who wrote on Jan 16, 2008.

okay, this article is on smoking, not cell phones. cell phones are annoying, not dangerous. smoking is the 2nd leading cause of death. my whole step side of my family smokes and they are in horrible condition. my little brother isnt even aloud to be around my grandfather becuase he has asthma from my step dad growing up around my grandfather smoking. not only does he smoke, but he has diabetes. and with him paying the prices for ciggarettes, he cant afford to buy his medication. so if smoking was cut out of public life, he wouldnt go through as many ciggarettes a day, leading up to him saving money so he can buy his medicene. also, smoking in restaurants is rude. the smoke can change the taste of your food. and being enclosed in a small space can add to the dangers of second hand smoke. smoking may be unhealthy to those who choose to do it, however, they have filters on the end of the ciggarettes. the pple around them do not. meaning the chemicals are not filtered out before they are added into the air we breath which goes into our lungs and decays them. so, next time you choose to say that
America is getting lazy, think about it more. because a person can be five yards away from the deadly chemicals and still inhale it. plus, smoking and talking on a cell phone in someone\'s home or even in a restaurant relate. because both are asked to go outside.

ya, im 13 and doing a school project. so next time you choose to insult those who are smart about their health and choose not to smoke, look into it more. because all in all, you\'re the lazy one.

buh-bye.
#173 by why should i tell you?, Jan 31, 2008
ok, smoking is plain stupid. duh, whoever invented it, must have been playing a practical joke. they must have been,
he he he, "Uh...smoke this!" he he he.
"ok, but whats in it?"
"I dont know....but its got a....smooth taste!?" he he he.

see what i mean? so get real...smoking is a joke....and its just plain nasty...and its stupid....so get a life, for all you smokers out there. the problem with our society is that we've just accepted it, like its perfectly normal, but since when is sucking in chemicals day in and day out perfectly normal?

smokers....get a clue!
#174 by Linnay, Jan 31, 2008
love the lord your God with all your heart, with all soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.
God doesn't want us harming our bodies, bodies he made perfect in the image of him, smoking is just one of the ways our society has conformed into harming our bodies. So dont destroy the temple God has made for you, but take care of it and doing this will glorify him.
#175 by mr2 owner, Jan 31, 2008
ok to #165. wow ur 15 right ok so what ur saying is i should haft to move every time i dont want to be around ciggarette smoke. how is that right, and by the way you cant compare smoking to cell phones. using a cell phone isn\'t going to hurt you, but if u smoke around me im going to inhale second hand smoke which causes lung cancer and emphysema. im not sure what amendment it is but it states that your rights end where my rights begin. so you might have the right to smoke where ever you want to but not when it hurts my health. plus being only 15 why are you smoking anyway?? I know its your choice but have u looked at all of the statistics, all your doing is killing yourself for nothing. To top it off smoking is so expensive, that money could be going to something useful for yourself. Its not about being lazy, your invading my rights end of story.

I dont think smoking should be banned in public places, smokers have rights too,if smoking is gonna be banned in public places than cigarettes shouldnt be sold any more, and thats not gonna happen its a free world and i say smoke where you want if someone doesnt like it than i guess they will either have to move away from you or deal with it, one of the two choices will work

Just because you want to harm yourself doesn't mean you should take everyone else down with you. Get over yourself and stop being so selfish. Smoke outside; its not going to kill you. Smoking will :)
#213 by Mi, Apr 15, 2008
First off, this article has a lot of grammatical errors. It is harmful to the brain to read such dribble. A second thing, the reasonings are sound, but what about other harmful substances? Alcohol, guns, nuclear weapons, lighters, etc., hurt people. Why shouldn't any of those things be banned. Smoking around children, the elderly, and those with pulmonary conditions should not be allowed, I agree. That being said, children, the elderly, and those with pulmonary conditions aren't the only ones living in this world. The do not own the streets or the sidewalk. Considerations and compromise has to be made for everyone. Saying that a smoker should not smoke in public places because of people with asthma is like saying pollen shouldn't grow because of people with allergies. Seriously, how likely is that to happen? Smoking is a choice an individual makes for himself/herself. No one, children, elderly, or otherwise, can impede their decision on that person.
#214 by Andrian, Apr 16, 2008
grammatical errors not a problem as long as the message that the author want to sent is making sense./.I agree with you..Smoking should be banned in public places..

#223 by , Apr 29, 2008
Having liberty is one thing, and using that liberty to kill oneself, as I see it, is totally wrong. I know it is a challenge for hardcore smokers to quit, but it is the only way to be healthy. I believe that the government should give free courses and/or aid to help stop smokers from smoking. And maybe also some non-smoker tax benefits, to encourage people to stop smoking.

I think there are bigger problems in any country than smoking, first of all you complain about people who smoke saying that they polute the air around you but you don\'t complain or raise yor voice about dangerous gasses from cars,industries,...smoking, by all means, is a bad habit but all of you non-smokers are too judging and before-let\'s call it a law- about banning smoking in public places nobody really complained but now everybody has to say something about it...you should be ashamed of your hypocrisy.I come from a small and not so rich country in Europe, hearing people argue about it makes me angry and sad at the same time cause we have much bigger problems-for example our bad politics, high prices, low standards, many people with no job....etc.I think everybody here should realize that the government doesn\'t give a damn about your health and that everything is connected with digusting politics and mafia. This is a great example of human stupidity, think about it people, think about things that REALLY MATTER
#230 by flygirl13, May 7, 2008
I think that both the smoker and the non-smoker need to be respectful of one another. However, recent scientific evidence has shown that separating non-smokers from smokers (like in a restaurant) or ventilating the area cannot keep non-smokers from being exposed to secondhand smoke. A few years ago I was in a restaurant and some people were smoking and my face puffed up and got all red. I was so embarrassed that I hid in the bathroom for 20 minutes. I'm not saying that people should be forced to quit smoking all together, I mean, I understand that they're addicted. But a lot of the time it feels like they're imposing that addiction upon the non-smokers. The shortest exposure to secondhand smoke can cause massive health damage.

First of all,nayie4hope, please learn how to write. Secondly, all of you that commented saying second-hand smoke is not harmful are COMPLETELY WRONG!! Second-hand smoke has been classified as a known cause of cancer in humans by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Second-hand smoke causes approximately 50,000 deaths of non-smokers every year.
There's no risk-free level of exposure to second-hand smoke.
For future reference, before you ever post anything on the internet again, make sure you educate youself first!
Thanks,

In my opinion smokers are people who are mentally weak and are paying for their slow death and/or somebody elses. There is nothing good about smoking. Some of the things that defines smokers:
* bad breath
* yellow teeth
* smelly clothes
* more colds and coughs
* difficulty keeping up with friends when playing sports
* empty wallet — cigarettes and tobacco products are
very expensive!

#270 by fluffy, Sep 5, 2008
I'm a smoker, I feel that my rights are being infringed upon. How about the business owners of the bars and rest. that put in the smoking sections (all enclosed) which cost a pretty bundle and then the city of Ft. Wayne put in a no smoking ban for public places. That's wrong. They can have places outside, but what happens in the winter? Where are are rights then?

and he'll stop ALL cigarete companies from manufacturing. THAT IS WHAT SHOULD DEFINETLY HAPPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#274 by Carolyn, Sep 12, 2008
Well, all the bad publicity of the wrongs and rights of the smokers! It is all another political correct state, oh we are acustomed to it? Smoking, drinking, both of which are killers, have tax stamped on them. It is a national piggy bank for the smokers to damage their health and others around them. Smoking apparently is the most slowest suicide of all but it legall! And drink they have 24hours opening now, yeah, whoopie to the young binge drinkers lets help everyone die and as a result legalise it all, thanks to the government the freedom of which we have either as a smoker or drinker it lines the governments pockets. Get a grip all you who do that self harming, live life or die.
#275 by Liane Schmidt, Sep 12, 2008
I am glad you wrote this article. I really want smoking to be banned as well.

I don't think it's fair for another person to engage in an activity that can be harmful to another person who did not choose to smoke. It's one thing, for example, for someone to drink, the reason drinking and driving is illegal is because you can potentially harm another person in the process... this logic needs to be applied to smoking as well.

For example, sitting in an outdoor public place where there is fresh air is something we all deserve and yet if one person starts smoking it ruins it for everyone and places each person in a toxic atmosphere. No one has the right to put your health in danger - no one.

Great article.

Best wishes.

Sincerely,

-Liane Schmidt.

What gives you the right to tell anyone what they can or cannot do? I smoked for 34 yrs, I enjoyed the satisfaction of smoking but not the coughing & hacking and quit in \'92. But nowhere does this give me the right to tell you not to smoke. If you and Government are sooo adamant on banning smoking why not get together and force the tobacco industry to STOP putting their \"secret recipe\" into cigarettes. What\'s that you say? secret recipe? Yes folks the tobacco industry puts a various voriety of 600+ chemicals INCLUDING extra nicotine into those nasty ciggies. Studies have shown they nicotine addiction is about as bad as heroin. Now if you want the Government to help you put the squeeze on the tobacco barons you will have to pay them more than the tobacco lobbiests are paying them. If you succeed in this endevore and that is an astronomical \"IF\" you will save thousands of lives. Why? because if there isn\'t any habit forming drugs in ciggies why smoke? If anyone wants to debate my facts, I\'m on yahoo at Mastertlb. Thanx for reading
#277 by Elizabeth, Sep 15, 2008
Dear Mr. Typo,

I suggest you learn how to write properly before you start handing out advice.

Here are just a few to boot....

1. Are they can release their tension too, or they will get the secondhand smoke?

2. Usually, smokings are allowed at the sideways, restaurant and also at the community centers. These places have many people including the children.

3. In the summary, I have used the technical vocabulary and long sentences because I think this sound more impressive and effective. (Great Job!)

4. When the smoker read about this summary, they will feel guilty and want to stop from smoking at all.

#278 by Smoking yes or no?, Sep 19, 2008
Well, you have to look at the cons of this idea as well, for example... If people are banned from smoking in public, then they will feel a need to smoke more often than they normally would and it will be done in their home. This particuarly matters when there are children in the home, because they are not old enough to decide whether or not to go to a place with second hand smoke. Another con is that a ban will drive many people out of business; not just tobaco companies. People who profit off off businesses and services targeted towards smokers will suffer since smokers will be less likely to come. The biggest con is that IF IF IF you even manage to pass this law, it is imposible to enforce completely. Particuarly small businesses will let it slide and individuals would not report occurances of smoking to authorities. I mean, COME ON, if you saw your friend smoking would you turn them in to the cops to get finned or worse! Society agrees that it is fine for individuals to hurt themselves to a certain extent as long as they do not hurt others. If smoking is this bad then why not ban fast food? It kills people right? As you can see this proposal has a long way to go before passing a ban can even be considered.

I do think that smoking should be banned in public places because it\\\'s not fair for us non smokers to have to inhale the smokers\\\' nasty smoke. If they want to smoke, that\\\'s their choice, and I don\\\'t really care. But it becomes a problem when you\\\'re destroying the health of innocnent people around you. Smoke if you want to, but have a little respect, and don\\\'t make the non smokers suffer because of your addiction. You chose to smoke, we didn\\\'t. And we shouldn\\\'t have to pay for it.

India banned smoking in public places from 2nd October 2008.

Will be a success story for our health minister? Surely no, as people are not going to quit smoking from a law which enforced on them. Better to ban cigarette manufacturing or impose high tax to make smoke costly. This law will help policemen to find another way to hack money from smokers.
What happened to the law, to prohibit tobacco product like pan masala and guka? Still we can see chains of these products are hanging in shops. Can’t government force this law first then go for another?
Many state government had done this, but we can see many people still enjoying the smoke.. So let us wait for 1 or 2 months to see how far this new rule will run successfully.
Government is trying to get money from two sources, tax from companies who manufacture the cigarettes (it is one of the high volume tax income) and penalty from smokers. On way this helps our police to earn much more from street. Now they are getting money from riders who are not wearing helmet and people who sell things on the platform. Let policemen enjoy the new income.
No government has guts to stop cigarettes production. No rule can restrict people not to smoke inside houses, this is not valid point and against constitution.

i think you all are being nieve.

and it is really as simple as that.
second hand smoke, though a terrible thing is not going to effect you unless you stay in a smoke riddin area for a given amount of time (which is longer than a meal) you are not going to get asthma from eating your dinner at Dennys while billybob is smoking on the other side of the room. It doesnt work like that.

Yes, smoking is a terrible thing.
Yes, there should be laws restricting it.

But, let me put it to you this way.

Jannie is 3 years old. She lives in a home with 2 smoking parents. A Law to ban public smoking just went into effect and Jannie's parents are forced to smoke at home.

congrats. you have saved yourself from bad smelling smoke, but you also put little Jannie at risk for serious desises that she can NOT save herself from.

how many 3 year olds do you know that can get up and walk away from cancer? think about it.

Asin food, Indian food, Mexican food, American food... all give off potent smells, some good, some terrible. Inhalling these smells are just the same as the LITTLE amount of "second hand" smoke you inhale at a public eating establishment that already has in place a designated smoking and nonsmoking section.

but you dont see us banning smelly food.

Do some research, fight about the right thing.
#300 by To valued information, Oct 16, 2008
I was looking for an article to assist in my plight in stopping my neighbours (Sectional Title Scheme) from smoking outside in the public areas. They don\'t smoke inside their homes because of the smell.
So instead my family and the other units must suffer the second hand smoke from No 4 that has 4 adults that smoke and in No. 2 with 1 adult that smokes. Strangely nobody else smokes in the complex.
Why can\'t they just smoke inside and get the full value out of their smoking. If smoking is all that smokers make it out to be, then it should be enjoy to the full. Why waste that good old second hand smoke and at the same time they can get the full advantage from that lovely smell that makes you want to light-up.
If there is anybody out there with actual advise (with in the SA law) please share.

i'm reserching smoking in public and i found these facts

 you inhale the smoke into your lungs. This means that your lungs are directly exposed to the 4,000 toxic substances in cigarette smoke.
 smoking kills more than 400,000 Americans
 half of these people -- about 180,000 -- die from diseases of the heart or arteries, such as heart attacks or strokes
 increases a person's risk of several digestive tract diseases, and it can cause deadly cancers of the digestive organs.
 breath or clothing -- take a look at their fingernails.
 fingernails an ugly yellowish-brown color, especially on the hand that holds the cigarette.
 Smokers have higher rates of several mental health problems -- including depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and drug abuse -- than nonsmokers do.
 cigarette smoking is the leading preventable cause of visual disorders and blindness
 $122. Just to get cigarettes
 10,000(one year's consumption for one smoker)

i can't beleve this bu it is the truth.

im only 15. i dnt smoke and
never will. i have a parent
that decides to smoke but
that doesnt mean im going to
look up to him and follow his
smoking footsteps. i know whats
right and whats wrong. i also
know that there are places where
alot of smoking takes place; so
any smart person would ban themself
from attending those areas. it would
be nice if people would stop smoking
in general, but every1 know thats
not going to happen as long as
the smokers are entitled to their
individual rights. i think that
smoking should be banned in most
publis areas; exspecially those
areas where many children be at.
Smokers should respect the fact
jus cuz they want to harm their
bodies, we dnt want to harm ours,
second hand smoke can hurt us
just as much as the smoker and
they should be considerate of others.
i know what its like to have second
hand smoke. ive had asthma attacks
and other breathing problem from
ppl choosing to smoke and it
doesnt feel good to instantly
drop to the floor because an
inconsiderate smoker decides to
blow smoke around me.

You know what? I completly agree. I think we should ban smoking and make the people pay if they do. This is serious. I hate smokers. Every time I come out of a store I see people smoke I put my shirt around my mouth. I sickends me. SO I COMPLETLY AGREE AMERICA SHOULD BAN SMOKING CAUSE IF WE DO THE WORLD WILL BE A BETTER PLACE.-unknown.

ok jade and bianca, you tell me why my i had to watch my grandparents suffer from second hand smoke when they didn\'t smoke....i know its because of people who smoked around them! do want u want in ur house, but dont go out in public and put employees and customers at risk because they stayed smart and are saving money, while others cant get themselves outta debt bc cigs are so expensive. so in the next serval years people better not be using my tax dollars for medical need...its their fault their dumb@$$ smoked in the first place. im 15 and clearly i have more knowledge on the demographic knowledge of cause and effect than YOU!!!! im an athlete and im not getting asthma so yes you can fk up ur own life but not the life of my friends or family

yes smoking in public areas should be banned. i am living in china right now and there are more than few hundred people smoking in subway, bus, and shopping center. i heard that china started the ban smoking campaign from May. but still, many people smoke just under the no smoking logo. i read this article when i am doing the speech. i chose the topic \"no smoking in public areas\"
#354 by tom, Feb 24, 2009
they should band smoking in public places

well smoking maybe be bad and it is and people shouldn't smoke in public places but maybe in some places but we can't limit them we czant tell them what to do! Like they should have one place for pure smokers only and shops and restaurants with staff that only somke too! Thats my opinion!!!

#376 by mz. all that, Mar 16, 2009
I dont smoke, and i agree that smoking is harmful to people who smoke and also who they choose to smoke around. However, smoking will never be banned. You can'nt try to stop a whole world full of smokers to just stop. Besides, the government is making way to much money off of cigarettes to banned them.

#393 by deanne,, Mar 24, 2009
ok, first off, you can't judge anyone just because they smoke or if they don't smoke. i am a non-smoker, but i disagree that it should be illegal, i mean.. you can't just be thinking for the non-smoker's, you have to be thinking of EVERYONE.
#394 by MIA Boss, Mar 25, 2009
Ok First off not to offend you or anything, I agree with you but shouldn't people have the right to smoke, I understand it is bad for the Non-Smoker and The Smoker but people should just accept the fact that smokers want to smoke. And for public places like resturants they should add a section where people can smoke and close that section off from non-smokers that don't want to recieve anything bad such as second-hand smoke. I understand people can die from cancer(any types now) but and like Deanne said you shouldn't just think off yourself think of everyone else first.
#395 by babygirl, Mar 25, 2009
smoking should not be banned from all public places. I think people just need to think about the stuff that there doing to themselfs.i mean i smoke and I know that im going to regret it. Im only 14 almost 15 and I plan on stopping only cause I dont want that stuff in my life. I only started smoking cause I was depressed. BUT PEOPLE JUST THINK ABOUT WHAT YOUR DOING TO YOURSELF! I HAVE AND I REGRET IT ALL!!!!

#401 by smoker89, Apr 8, 2009
i am a smoker and I agree that smoking should be banned in public places and i am currently about to give a speech on why smoking should be banned but i don't think their should be no more cigarettes because that is one of the only things our economy has right now is cigarettes and with out them we would be in more debt but as i said before smoking should be banned in public places
#402 by abby, Apr 13, 2009
i think that they should ban smoking in public places.... in some plubic places did ban smoking but i think that it should spread through out the whole united states
#403 by hi, Apr 13, 2009
i am doing a speech and need more reasons why smoking should be banned in public places. please help!
#404 by ROFLLMAO, Apr 16, 2009
i think smoking should seriously be banned because smkoing in public is was causes second hand smoking!
#405 by uhh, Apr 21, 2009
Ive been a victim of second hand smoke my whole life, and ive never even heard of these... Smoking should be reduced but not banned in public places. I think this article is over exsagerating.

This person isn't calling for a total banning. Its calling for public banning. Which is only beneficial. Smokers can only do it in private places where its allowed. (their own home for example.
#413 by MyHime, Apr 26, 2009
SMOKING IS SOOO BAD ALOT OF PEOPLE DIE BECAUSE OF IT LIKE LUNG CANCERS AND MUCH MORE THEY SHOULD REALLY BANNED SMOKING IN PUBIC PLACES IT IS BAD FOR CHILDREN\'S AND ADULTS BECAUSE THEY BREATH IN IT FROM THE SMOKE IT IS BAD LIKE EVEN THE ADULTS THAT WORK AS A DEALER LIKE MY MOM SHES A DEALER AND LIKE SHE HAVE TO BREATH IN IT BECAUSE SHE CAN\'T HOLD HER BREATH FOR ONE HOUR EVERY DAY I THINK AND LIKE RIGHT NOW SHE KEEP ON SPITTING STUFF OUT FROM HER THORT AND I\'M AFFRIED TO LOSE MY MOM BECAUSE OF IT I LOVE HER VERY MUCH AND THATS WHY EVERYONE WANTS TO BANNED SMOKING......, :C

i honestly dont understand why people make such a big deal out of people who smoke. just let us smokers live our life and you non-smokers live yours. deal with it.
#416 by zach, Apr 30, 2009
well i'm not going to die way early cuz people like you decide to smoke and put everyone around you in danger and kill us along with yourself
#417 by J-Dog, May 1, 2009
I hate being in the presence of smokers. I feel like I\'m dying as I breath in their smoke. It should be banned totaly from the face of the earth.
#418 by david, May 1, 2009
Smoking sections doesn't protect us nonsmokers from second hand smoke. We need to ban smoking in public to protect our own lungs from being contaminated.

i dont think that they should ban smoking from public places, its going to cause bars and resturants business. because i am a smoker i do not go in to bars or resturants now that have no smoking i think it should be up to the owners of the places if they want to have smoking or like someone said earlier have rooms closed off for non smokers. i also am a waitress and about 85% of me customers are smokers thats going to cost me my job because those people or what help me survive in this world so not only is banning smoking from public places taking our rights away its making me lose money or economy is not at its greatest as it is so why dont we make it wosre and band smoking so i really have to struggle to survive. SMOKING is GREAT!!
#432 by cassondra, May 11, 2009
i totally agree with you smoking should be banned in public places... its not fair to the millions of people that don't smoke to have to suffer cause a small group of people want to smoke... the nonsmoker should always come before the smoker cause we are healthy and want to stay healthy but the smoker is already kill them self so why should they kill us..
#433 by km, May 13, 2009

#435 by Deanna H, May 20, 2009
i feel if someone wants to mess up their lungs they have every right to do it..... smokin has been legal for 79 years why change it now... ppl kno that their are other ppl smokin and if they dnt want to breathe in the smoke they can go to a different area of the resturant... or wherever they are.... thats how i feel about bannin smokin in public place....
#436 by Kaitlyn, May 30, 2009
the world doesnt revolve around you, Meg #431. just so you can you can make money, doesnt mean smoking shouldnt be banned. [i agree with this article 100%]. and just because 85% of your customers smoke doesnt mean they are buying cigarrettes from you, they go there to eat, seeing as you are a waitress. they can still continue going to eat without smoking, so really-you would still have a job, your over exaggerating. people can handle eating one meal without smoking, and if they can't, well then they have problems and need to seek help. also, smoking is gross, messes up your lungs, and could kill you later on. do you smokers really want to live a life where you feel like your breathing through a straw!? that would be torture! and smokers, please think of others as you smoke around them. just because you want to smoke and hurt your lungs, doesnt mean you should hurt the lungs of those around you as well. and dont get me wrong, i dont hate smokers, i have friends who smoke, but i dont hang out with them when they do smoke, i let them go somewhere else to smoke. there are also a lot of people in the world who are considerate to nonsmokers and so they go to an unpopulated area to smoke and i really appreciate that. as long as people know the effects of smoking, and are considerate to nonsmokers around them, i think smoking is fine. even though i do think it should be banned of the face of the earth. but that wont ever happen, its unrealistic. so yeah, theres what i think.
#437 by Asep Miftahudin, Jun 7, 2009
I agree 100 and 1o percent with content of your writing. But please chech and recheck, and edit and reedit your English before you let the public read it!
#438 by Non-smoker, Jun 24, 2009
i am a non-smoker and i agree totally with what you say but even the smoker has his rights to somke and so what are the places where he can smoke. i am working on a project so there must be a balance between the pros and cons of smoking. we must alvays remember that the world isn't all ours, even smokers have rights to there life like non-smokers so we must also cooperate with them to have a better life for the both of us.
