Smoking and restaurants don't mix. Cigarette smoke in public places like restaurants is unhealthy for everyone so it should be illegal. Firstly, smoking is dangerous for smokers. Secondly, smoking will drive away restaurant customers because they don't want to breathe smoke while they are eating. Last of all, smoking violates people's rights; nobody should be forced to breathe cigarette smoke.
Smoking is dangerous to the health of people who smoke. Their lungs are being destroyed. The tar they get from the cigarettes is going to their lungs and it is hurting them; eventually they may develop cancer. Also, because of the nicotine, they are getting more and more addicted to cigarettes as they smoke. Every time a smoker inhales a cigarette a part of his brain says “more, more, more!” Being allowed to smoke in public will only make them smoke more often. However, if they can't smoke in public they will be forced to smoke less.
Smoking drives away customers. Many restaurant clients don't like the smell of smoke. When an individual starts to smoke some customers might leave. They may have trouble tasting their food and enjoying the meal they are paying for. People know that smoke is dangerous and they don't want to get even small amounts of tar in their lungs. Most customers probably wouldn't want their kids to breathe in cigarette smoke either.
Smoking is unhealthy for non-smokers who inhale second-hand smoke. When they inhale it, their lungs are exposed to tar and nicotine. Another problem is that some people get addicted easily. When they smell or inhale the smoke, they might want to smoke or if they are trying to quit it might tempt them to start again. Lastly, people with respiratory problems that are around smoke can start to have an asthma attack and have to go to a hospital.
Smoking in restaurants is rude. Because it violates the publics right to clean air, it should be illegal. People who smoke in public are causing damage to themselves and others. Many restaurant customers don't enjoy their meals because of the smoke. More importantly, the people breathing second-hand smoke are endangered by the smoke. We need a law in the United States that makes smoking in restaurants illegal.
