Teenage Pregnancy

According to Janine Jackson, approximately one million teens become pregnant each year in the United States with shocking results: 520,000 births, 405,000 abortions, & 80,000 miscarriages.

Luckily since the years 1980, our pregnancy rate has dropped slightly. However, did you know that our pregnancy rate is twice as high as England, France & Canada, three times as high as Sweden, and four times as high as The Netherlands? These numbers for teen pregnancy are way too high and need to be lowered. Teenage pregnancy is a serious problem, and should not occur because of the terrible consequences.

Teenage pregnancies lead to many daunting challenges for parents. According to National Campaign To Prevent Teen Pregnancy, the mothers are the ones who suffer the most challenges. Less than one-third of teens that begin their families before age the age of 18 never complete high school. It prevents them from getting a good education, which later can affect them in to trying to get a good job. Many young mothers are also most likely to end up on welfare. Unfortunately 80 percent of fathers, do not marry these moms and don't help pay support for these babies. Only making the life of the mother much harder to make it through.

Teenage pregnancies also negatively affect the child. According to National Campaign To Prevent Teen Pregnancy, mothers under the age of 18 are more likely to have children prematurely and at low birth weight. Low birth weight raises the probabilities of infant death, blindness, deafness, chronic respiratory problems, mental retardation, and mental illness. There are many other various health problems that come about within the babies. In addition the mothers and fathers are still in the process of growing which only makes it harder to provide for infants and young children. Children of teen mothers also do much worse in school than those to older parents (2,3-6). According to Liza W., studies have shown that the sons of teen mothers are thirteen percent more likely to end up in prison. The teen daughters are twenty-two percent more likely to become teen mothers themselves.

According to Janine Jackson, they are also known as incapable of making the right decisions. Some teens claim that their pregnancies were not always there fault and that poverty was not much of a factor. Some 50,000 teen pregnancies a year are the results of rape, and two-thirds of teen mothers have a history of rape or sexual molestation, with perpetrator averaging 27 years of age. Not every teen pregnancy was their original part of plan. It just happens sometimes and can't be dealt with. Also according to Janine Jackson, the media exaggerates the facts of teenage pregnancy causing poverty. Substantial evidence shows that teen pregnancy does not cause poverty. Most teens were at poverty level to begin with. Many also suggest that poverty is a cause of teen pregnancy, not an effect. Did you know that the fastest growing poverty group in America since 1979 has been married-couple families with children? So this idea, of teenage pregnancy causing poverty, may not be accurate.

Teenage pregnancy leads up to very serious problems, which may alter your future in many serious ways. The struggles of the mothers, the martyr of the children, and the poverty level are all effects of teen pregnancy. Yes, the media does sometimes over speak of teenage poverty level and teen pregnancy maybe not always be there fault. Nevertheless, teen pregnancy is not the source of poverty, but it is indeed an extravagant load. Young teens don't always have the money to support their babies needs. Especially since most likely, they are at a job working for minimum wage which is not what they need to pay for a child. If people want to think that teenage pregnancy is not a source of poverty, they can go and read over the facts once again. Many children are not living the opportunity they could be having because their mothers aborted them. It is stated in the Bible that sex must wait until marriage yet, teens today still continue get pregnant disobey God's mighty laws. Though there is never too much praise, what are you going to do to prevent it?
