War on Terror

The participation of America in war in Iraq.

Our country has been involved in many wars throughout its history. These wars have been noted as either a success or a failure. Our current war, the War on Terror, is no exception, although its end result is disputable. However, one can draw an educated conclusion predicting the War on Terror's fate from its current status. The War on Terror is most likely going to be a failure.

One reason the War on Terror will fail is because of the poor planning done at the beginning of this war. President Bush has yet to show us the light at the end of the tunnel, or the end result from going to war. He keeps saying how the war will soon be over, but still keeps sending more and more troops over seas. General Petraeus has devised a plan to get troops out of Iraq, but when the troops finally come out, the Iraqis might fight back and therefore making the war, and all those innocent American people die in vain.

Another reason why the war is a failure is because of the lack of motive. President Bush claims the war started because of the nuclear weapons threat from Iraq but there have been no nuclear bombs recovered yet. Because of this misconception the war became aimless with no ideas of what the United States was actually fighting for. Since the war has no intent, there is no clear end in sight. There is no change to look for that would signify the end of the war therefore the troops will be overseas for an unknown amount of time.

One last reason the War on Terror is a failure is because of the lack of support from the United States people. According to the Press-Ipsos poll, 57% of people said that the United States made a mistake in starting the war and 59% believe that this war will be looked back upon as a failure. If there is a lack of support within the country, the funding for the war and the number of new soldiers will decrease leaving the government with nothing to fall back upon. If there aren't enough troops overseas, the United States will inevitably be outnumbered by the Iraqis and fail to overcome terrorism.

The success and failure of the War on Terror is a key issue. This war is more likely to fail because of the poor planning done by President Bush, the misconceptions about the reason for the war, and the lack of support from the American people.
