Cambridge University Press, one of the leaders in teaching English as a second language, offers online dictionaries that help writers - especially non-native English speakers - with word usage. Besides the definition and pronunciation, those dictionaries provide samples which clarify how the word is to be used. This publishing company also offers an additional service in which some more samples are added and words can be heard for an insignificantly low charge.
The world-wide famous Merriam Webster's dictionary can also be accessed online; however, it is also necessary to be a paid member to access the unabridged version. Although it does not provide so many samples, it does give some valuable, self-explanatory definitions that also assist writers and people in need of knowing the meaning of a certain word.
Encyclopedia Britannica has been known and famous for many decades. Having it at home has always been regarded as convenient. With the advent of computers, it is now possible to access it online for a little charge or to buy it on CD. When the latter is the choice, it needs to be replaced from time to time, whereas, when it is accessed online, it is always up-to-date.
The largest and most popular online encyclopedia is Wikipedia. One can gather virtually any information in it at no charge whatsoever. It is also possible to edit whatever has been found, and this poses the problem of not being so reliable. It is certainly advisable to verify the information obtained by looking into a more credible source, but most of the times - at least in my experience - the information is accurate.
Besides the dictionaries and encyclopedias mentioned above, there are many other sources that are intended to improve education. It is certainly a fact that students can benefit from them a great deal if they make proper use of them. For instance, there are some libraries online that have been of a great deal of assistance to researchers. One can now obtain some books online and read them on the screen. However, while copying and pasting is always possible with online dictionaries and encyclopedias, it becomes partially intricate - if not impossible - with those books, as they are PDF files most of the times. Given that they are copyrighted material, those libraries are not willing to allow any copying in their end
When the Internet is used for educational purposes, there should not be any dispute. It is for the best interest of society to make people more knowledgeable and educated. Someone using online dictionaries and encyclopedias properly will indeed see some improvements in his or her daily tasks.
