How to Learn a Foreign Language

When you want to learn a foreign language, you may find that it is difficult for you to master. Being a bilingual speaker, I have some suggestions here to share with you.

I think that we should know why we should learn foreign languages before we start to learn them. If we have no clear answers to this question, it is better to stop learning any other languages, for it will be very difficult to learn the language with right methods or means if we have no clear aim in mind.

According to my observation, I think that people learn foreign languages with two main purposes: one is to have the foreign language mainly for the work; another is to have the foreign language as a tool for communication only. If we want to take the foreign language as a profession, we will study it systematically in a foreign language studies university. If we use it only as a tool, we can learn it in our spare time.

I have received specialized training in English, and I have worked with some foreigner as colleagues and friends. I have some friends in Shanghai who have no experience of professional training, but they speak English just as wonderful. The reason is that they communicate with foreigners to discuss about some issues of the projects that they work on. What I want to say here is that, the key to master a foreign language is to use it. Otherwise, you will forget most of them soon. I have learned Japanese, Russia, French, Korean, but I can only remember a few words of them now. What I master well are English and Chinese, which I use a lot every day.

Therefore, when learning a foreign language, try to find all kind of opportunities to practice and use it. I think that it is the most effective way. If we lack this kind of environment, we need to try to create opportunities. For example, we can find online friends in the language that we are learning. Try to communicate in the language. Try to find some pen friends in the language, too. It could be very helpful.

Think carefully about the schedule of your study, and try to collect some materials you are going to use to learn the language. If possible, find a mentor, better a native of that language.

I think if you want to learn a language, you will find ways to learn it well. Remember, practice makes perfect. Use what you learn, and it is the best way to master it.
