When you sentence some one to the death penalty you are purposely putting some one to death for a very serious and punishable crime that the defendant most likely committed normally homicide. Since 1976 1099 people have been executed consisting of 625 Caucasians, 374 African Americans, 76 Hispanics and 24 Other races. With a peak of 98 executions in 1999. There were little or no executions in the years 1976-1983 witch there were less than 12 executions in those years.
Currently there are 13 states with the death penalty and the remaining 37 states including the US government and the US military that have the death penalty. A major concern of American people is what if the person is put on death row and did not commit the crime and was put to death. A consideration that needs to be taking into thought is what if we put the offenders on life with out parole would that solution be more cost effective for the state conducting the execution because an execution is more expensive than putting a offender on life with out parole. People say that executing the defender brings no peace to the victims. There are some people that the death penalty is premeditated murder or a collective punishment. The death penalty is the last concern of police chiefs their biggest concern is reducing the drug abuse.The death penalty goes against peoples religious beliefs and humanists.The national murder rate is 5.7 per 100,000 in 2006 with the death penalty it will not reduce crime.
In conclusion, the death penalty should be abolished because it is not cost effective and it is inhumane.
