For those of you who don't know there are laws that will help protect you when you buy a used car. Some of you may even need this while buying a new car. There are some facts you should know about the lemon law and things you should always have handy in case you may need it.
Different states have different laws and you will need to find out what they are for your state. Basically all states have the same example of a lemon. A lemon means you have had to get your car repaired a few times for the same problem in a certain amount of time. For example, if your car wont start every cold morning and it has been in the shop 4 times for the same thing, each time not being fixed , then you probably have a lemon. If their is something wrong with the car that can harm or possibly kill you, then it's also probably a lemon. This law pertains to cars and motor homes. A few states cover motorcycles, but not all of them.
Copies
You should always keep a copy of anything on your vehicle. Any history you were given on it should be kept. All your purchase contracts, any repair receipts you may have and any estimates you may have gotten. If your car came with any owners manuals or anything else, keep all that information. If you don't keep all your information then you could not be covered by the lemon law. That could be very upsetting if you just spent all your money on a car that wont run for you to get to work or some other important event in your life.
Conversations
You should write down everything that was said before and during your time of purchase. You should note down everything and anything the seller has said could and is wrong with the car. If you can try and recorded this conversation in case you need it in court later. If you have spoke to the seller many times, then your conversations can get confusing. So writing them down or recording them can stop you from being confused which will later help you during any court dates that you may have.
Repairs
If you have attempted several repairs you should also write these down. You will want to write down what the repair was. How much it cost to fix the repair. Also writing down where you took your car will help you out. Make sure you note how long your car was out of use during these times.
Attorney
If you think you have a lemon then you should contact an attorney who can further help you. Don't listen to what anyone says even car dealers about your car. They may be trying to protect someone. They are also not specialized in laws. They are there to sell and fix your car. Only an attorney that is specialized in lemon laws can help you. Most of the time, if you win you will not need to pay your attorney fees. Most attorneys will also talk with you for free and let you know if you should try for the lemon law or not.
